Porto Mantovano: Fake police officer charged with hotel scam.

In the last few years the phenomenon of fraud carried out through the improper use of the name and prestige of the Carabinieri has seen a significant increase, taking on increasingly sophisticated forms and capable of exploiting digital tools and the trust citizens place in institutions.

Among these is the so-called "fake Carabiniere" scam, a carefully constructed fraud: institutional language, references to ranks and operational functions, false banking documentation apparently attributable to the CarabinieriA deception designed to appear credible and natural.

The deception that starts with a phone call

The story, discovered by Carabinieri of the Porto Mantovano Station, starts with a phone call. A man, introducing himself as “Selected Corporal of the Carabinieri”, contact a local hotel explaining that he needs to book a room for himself and some colleagues engaged in operational service in the province.

The tone is professional, confident, and free of inconsistencies. They are discussed price, arrival times and parking for company cars, elements that reinforce the illusion of being in front of a real soldier of the Carabinieri.

The fake document: the illusion becomes material

The next step is to send an email bank transfer slip, apparently registered to the Carabinieri. Letterhead, institutional logo and payment wording make the document credible, but the amount appears double what was agreed.

Shortly after, the self-styled policeman calls the hotel again explaining that it was an administrative error and asks for the refund of the difference, approximately 1.000 €, on a private account.

The suspicion and the report

The payment, however, he is never creditedThe hotelier, suspicious, decides to contact the Carabinieri of Porto Mantovano, providing all the documentation: email, bank statement, telephone numbers and conversation details.

The military immediately started the investigations, verifying email origin, document graphics, telephone numbers, operational databases and institutional referencesThe outcome is clear: everything is false, the bank transfer does not exist and the reservation was never requested by the Force.

The lightning investigation and the complaint

Thanks to investigative techniques and coordination with other Commands, the Carabinieri traced the identity of the alleged perpetrator: a 33-year-old resident of the province of Naples, already known for similar episodes in other regions.

The man was reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office for aggravated fraud, in the prosecution's hypothesis, for having abused the name of the Force and misled the victim in order to obtain an illicit profit.
