An elderly woman attempts suicide on the tracks in Mantua: Carabinieri save her at the last minute.

An afternoon that should have passed peacefully after the severe storm that had hit the city turned into a near-tragedy. At 16:10 PM, the Carabinieri Operations Center in Mantua received a desperate call: a panicked man reported that his wife had laid down on the train tracks, intent on taking her own life.

The alarm and immediate intervention

The soldier on the phone, keeping his cool, reassured the woman's husband and, in the meantime, activated the rescue machine: a patrol was dispatched to the scene and, at the same time, a request was made to the RFI operations center to block rail traffic, thus preventing trains from passing on the Mantua–Modena line.

Thanks to geolocation, the nearest patrol was located, that of the Porto Mantovano station, engaged in a patrol in the Nuvolari Gardens. The officers activated sirens and flashing lights, speeding through the city streets with one goal: to save a life.

The rescue on the tracks

The Carabinieri arrived near Via Aliano Bracci just in time. A 71-year-old woman, a resident of Mantua, was lying on the platform, screaming that she wanted to end it all. At her side, her desperate husband was trying in vain to persuade her to stop.

The uniformed men quickly approached, engaging in a brief conversation to distract her, until they decided to lift her up and carry her away from the track. Just then, a train, already ordered to stop, was approaching.

The hug and the care

Once safe, the woman—who suffers from Alzheimer's—surprised her rescuers by embracing them in a long, emotional and grateful embrace. Shortly thereafter, she was handed over to the care of the 118 emergency personnel who arrived on the scene, who transported her to Mantua Civil Hospital with a green code for evaluation.

Return to service

After the intervention, the Carabinieri reported the positive outcome to the Operations Center, turned off their flashing lights, and resumed their service, ready to respond to further calls. A life saved, a routine shift transformed into a special mission.

A story of silent dedication

The episode, which ended without tragedy, once again demonstrates the silent yet crucial face of the Carabinieri's daily work: men and women ready to risk their lives to protect those of citizens, regardless of age, origin, or condition.

At the end of their shift, the two officers were able to shake hands, knowing they had made a difference. Because this is what it means to be Carabinieri: always there, silently but courageously, to defend those in need.
