The Lombardy Region makes 64 homes available for women victims of violence

The first 64 homes will be made available to women victims of violence in Lombardy, on the basis of the experimental project promoted by the Region in collaboration with Aler(Lombardy Companies for Residential Construction), Anti-violence centers and shelters.

This is foreseen by a resolution of the Regional Council approved on the proposal of the councilor for housing and social housing, Paolo Franco, in agreement with the Councilor for Family, Social Solidarity, Disability and Equal Opportunities, Elena Lucchini, and the Councilor for Security and Civil Protection, Romano La Russa.

The objective is to support women in their journey towards housing independence, fundamental for the recovery and rebirth of those who turn to specialized centers to escape serious situations of domestic violence. A measure that takes on an even stronger meaning also in relation to the recent events concerning housing policies.

The measure, through a regional allocation of 1,5 million euros, provides for a contribution for Aler who provide accommodation for CAV (Anti-violence centres) and CR (Shelter Houses). The financing makes it possible to offer women victims of violence adequate housing solutions at no cost for the duration of 5 years. At the end of the economic coverage period the accommodation may remain available to the CAV/CR managers with an agreed rental fee.

“A home for yourself and your children - underlined Councilor Franco - is an essential and indispensable element for abused women to emerge from the nightmare and start living again. The plan for the relaunch of housing policies, called 'Mission Lombardy', also acts with determination on the 'housing welfare' front, providing initiatives like this one that can help, in a pragmatic way, people who need support from institutions. In particular, the assignment of zero-cost housing to victims of abuse is part of the directives given to the Aler. The resolution also gives the Aler the mandate to sign agreements with the Anti-Violence Centers".

"I strongly wanted this innovative experimentation - highlighted councilor Lucchini - to concretely promote the housing independence of women who turn to our Centers especially in the case of the presence of one or more minor children and people with disabilities in the family unit. An intervention that will strengthen our entire social network in support of all women and which received the utmost attention from all the institutions involved. An intervention that we want to become structural and for which last May we made available a further 1,5 million which will allow us to scroll through the ranking of applications and be able to grant other properties already by the end of this year".

"Work for the safety of citizens and women in particular - stated Councilor La Russa – means having an impact with tangible actions like this, the result of effective collaboration between different subjects. The Lombardy Region is in the field with every possible tool to tackle this social plague: women in difficulty can find in the institutions a solid point of reference for starting a path of protection and personal and social rebirth”.
