The Lombardy Region launches a challenge to the European Union: artificial intelligence in schools

Lombardy Region proudly announces the creation of a Board of experts dedicated to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools.

This working group aims to develop innovative guidelines for teaching AI, promoting ethical, inclusive and future-oriented education.

In a historical moment in which the 'AI act' has so far written many warnings, Lombardy Region develops guidelines to support the potential of these tools, riding all its effectiveness.

Enhance all opportunities related to the use of Artificial Intelligence in schools by introducing specific training for teachers of Education and Vocational Training so that, from September, students can learn – according to an ethical approach – how to best use these new technologies.

"An important project – explained the regional councilor for Education, Training and Work Simona Tironi - especially in step with the times we are living in, with an unprecedented change in society, dictated by technological innovation and also by artificial intelligence. Today, more than 65% of children already use AI in their daily lives, often even without knowing it, and use artificial intelligence to do their homework, develop essays and prepare lessons".

The objectives of the board of experts, coordinated by Lorenzo Maternini, member of the Artificial Intelligence Commission of the Presidency of the Council, they are very ambitious:

Risk-based and ethical guidelines: the Board is committed to create guidelines that take into account potential risks in the use of AI, following an approach inspired by the AI Act. The goal is to promote the ethical use of artificial intelligence, respectful of human rights and individual freedoms.

Prevention of improper use: strategies will be developed to explain how to prevent plagiarism and the production of false content, guaranteeing the integrity of the educational path. It is crucial to educate students about ethics and the responsible use of AI, with clear guidelines and careful monitoring.

Equitable and inclusive education: the AI will be taught in schools to ensure equal opportunities for all students, supporting quality education, fair and inclusive, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Personalized education: Sara promoted the use of AI tools to provide personalized education, adapted to the individual educational needs of students, improving the effectiveness of learning.

Interdisciplinary approach: thanks to the transversal capabilities of AI, a holistic and interdisciplinary educational approach will be promoted, capable of dealing with topics in both the humanistic and scientific fields.

Advanced analytical skills: students will learn to use data analysis tools, improving their analytical and interpretative skills, to be prepared to handle large amounts of information.

Responsible education for all: education on use responsible for AI will be addressed not only to students, but also to parents and teachers, promoting appropriate use of technology and mitigating associated risks.

Preparation for the world of work: the Board will prepare students for the world of work, providing fundamental skills in the use of AI, making them ready for an era increasingly dominated by technology.

"We are excited to launch this innovative project that will not only modernize our education system but will also ensure that our students - commented the councilor - are prepared to face the challenges of the future with advanced skills and train their critical spirit. We do not have the ambition to believe that we alone are right but we want to be the first to spark discussion and reflection on a topic so treated and discussed".

The Board of experts is already at work and the first guidelines will be presented in the first days of September. Lombardy Region confirms itself once again at the forefront of educational innovation, with an unwavering commitment to quality education and the well-being of our students.
