The Lombardy Region will invest 10 million to have smarter and more sustainable cities

The Lombard regional councilor for the environment and climate, Giorgio Maione, announced yesterday during the general assembly of Regions4 in Rio De Janeiro the call for green roads, i.e. making the city more sustainable, smart and able to adapt to climate change in the urban context.

“The adaptation of cities to climate change also involves innovative ideas. We are building a Lombardy that is increasingly smart and connected to the future. By the end of the year, we will invest 10 million euros to have green and intelligent streets in urban areas”. He announced it yesterday morning, Thursday 27 June in Rio De JaneiroDuring the Regions4 general assembly, international network of the Regions, the Lombard regional councilor for the Environment and Climate Giorgio Maione.

In fact, by the end of 2024 the Lombardy Region will open a tender worth 10 million of euros addressed to Municipalities for increase the capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change of urban public areas, particularly in response to extremes of temperature, precipitation or drought.

"VWe want to reduce polluting emissions and improve air quality - added Maione – also through the creation of green walls, agricultural areas and urban forests, cycle paths with environmental and water drainage functions, in addition to the installation of technological tools such as intelligent traffic lights which, through sensors, promote more fluid mobility and reduce emissions and waiting times, spacing out the light signals based on the number of vehicles present on each individual road artery”.

Projects to de-seal the soil with the creation of new green infrastructure will be financed and the planting of native plant essences capable of promoting the absorption of CO2, with the aim of counteracting the effects of the heat island. They will also be favored naturalistic engineering solutions for the management and recovery of water and the mitigation of the effects of temperature peaks.

"These interventions - he concluded – will allow the natural functions of the soil to be restored: a prerequisite for adapting to the climate crisis and for safeguarding the water balance. We must intervene with new ideas to limit the effects of extreme and concentrated weather events. It is also thanks to these interventions that the Lombardy model is being studied and appreciated at an international level”.
