Plastic Free has been organizing periodic initiatives for years environmental awareness on the dangers of plastic, particularly single-use plastic, and on the devastating effects on the entire ecosystem. Among these, there are the interventions of beach cleaning, carried out especially in the marina of San Cataldo, in collaboration with the municipal administration, which participates by providing the necessary equipment and the removal and disposal of waste through the urban hygiene service manager.
With the signing of the memorandum of understanding, Plastic Free is committed to realize a series of in the area free initiatives, such as, for example, plastic and non-hazardous waste collection events, environmental education lessons in schools, information and awareness raising online and through stands, ecological and tourist walks in the area, reporting of illegal waste abandonment. For its part, the Municipality undertakes to provide bureaucratic simplifications and some services to support the initiatives, such as the removal and disposal of recovered waste.
La signing of the memorandum of understanding with Plastic Free it also gives the opportunity to apply for "Municipality Plastic Free" for the 2024, competing for the awarding of a prize dedicated to Municipalities that have distinguished themselves by adopting a series of measures aimed at improving their territory for the good of the environment and for the good of future generations. The evaluation criteria yes based on 5 pillars: fight against illegal abandonment, raising awareness in the area, collaboration with Plastic Free, urban waste management and virtuous activities carried out.
«Our municipal administration has been sensitive to the issue of plastic for years – declares the Councilor for the Environment Angela Valli who signed the protocol for the Municipality – and the dangers to the environment associated with its use. Over time we have collaborated with Plastic Free by organizing awareness days with the cleaning of the coastal beaches carried out by volunteers, often involving schools. Now we are giving substance and substance to this collaboration with a memorandum of understanding that stimulates us to do even better and more: we will be together with the non-profit organization in initiatives aimed at making our city a "plastic free" municipality in the shortest possible time."
