Cagliari: International relations between the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the Generalitat de Catalunya have begun.

Institutional relations between the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the Generalitat de Catalunya have begun. At the Presidency, Franciscu Sedda, as an expert on autonomist issues and delegate for international relations, met Luca Bellizzi, delegate in Italy of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and Gustau Navarro Barba, delegate of the Generalitat in Alghero.

The meeting served to relaunch and consolidate relations between Sardinia and Catalonia, countries that have shared fundamental historical passages and are still linked on a cultural, linguistic and economic level, as demonstrated at the highest level by the experience of the Alghero community.

Sardinia and Catalonia have – and have been – strongly united in solidarity, as demonstrated for example by the formal declaration that the Sardinian Government and Parliament expressed in support of the peaceful will of the Catalan institutions to hold the independence referendum on 1 October 2017.

The two lands and their respective institutions, each in its own way, share the aspiration to develop paths of emancipation and self-determination with a view to fuller participation and protagonism of their respective peoples in the Mediterranean and European context.

The meeting was therefore an opportunity to give greater concreteness to these links through an all-round discussion on shared projects, already started and to be started, in institutional, cultural, environmental and scientific matters.

One of the main objectives that emerged from the meeting is to arrive at the definition of a memorandum of understanding between the Sardinia Region and the Generalitat de Catalunya which, by establishing a common control room, allows for the exchange of good practices and work together on the international scene.
