Begato (Genoa), construction of new buildings begins in place of the former dam
They left yesterday Tuesday 21st May, with the concrete casting of the foundations, the redevelopment and regeneration works of the Diamante neighborhood in Begato, funded with 15 million euros allocated by the Liguria Region through “National innovative program on quality of living” (Pinqua).
The first excavation concerns building B, one of three new buildings that will arise inthe place of the Red Dam and the White Dam, the two large public housing complexes built in the 80s and became a symbol of an urban planning policy that had shown clear limits.
"In this first pour there is great satisfaction and pride because we are officially launching an extraordinary project that will totally change the face of an entire neighborhood - explains the regional councilor for urban planning and construction - It was a historic day, in which we begin to restore dignity to a place, for too many years, forgotten by politics with hundreds of people forced to live inadequately. As a regional administration we immediately believed in a courageous and extraordinary overall operation, at the will and push of the president, putting care and respect for people first, especially those most in difficulty. An intervention that is symbolic of a new idea of residential construction that is not synonymous with marginalization, but with inclusion and improvement. 15 million euros to build three modern buildings that will be added to the accommodation in Via Cekhov. By the end of 2025 we will have a renovated, safe neighborhood with comfortable and cutting-edge accommodation from all points of view and with a completely different urban setting compared to the state this area was in before the works".
It began yesterday and the work is expected to last 16 months, 3 buildings will be built, for a total of 60 new apartments: 20 will be social housing and 40 will be public housing. The environmental house will also be renovated and new green paths will be created. The construction of a panoramic rest area is planned, an open-air theater on the base of the old 'red dam‘, a new house of culture, a center for neighborhood associations, a square and a new Carabinieri station.
"Yesterday another historic step forward was made in the field of urban regeneration in the Diamante Begato neighborhood, a project that saw strong synergy between our administration, the Liguria Region and Arte - declares the deputy mayor and councilor for public works of the Municipality of Genoa - with the start of construction of the new buildings, with the most modern energy efficiency standards, the housing offer in the neighborhood will be increased and improved. Furthermore, an important element of the regeneration operation lies in the attention to the social, to the spaces for sociability, to the public green areas which will contribute, in a decisive way, to improving the quality of life in the neighbourhood".
A part of the White Dam, in Chekhov Street, has been maintained and is currently the subject of important recovery and redevelopment works: the 37 remaining dwellings will be transformed into 55 highly energy-efficient residential units, with an intervention worth a total of 4 million and 270 thousand euros.
"The implementation process of the regeneration program of the Begato district continues - says the sole director of Arte Genova Paolo Gallo . Let's start with the reconstruction and configuration of a new model of living for a better quality of life for residents."
