35 new automatic eco-islands in the streets of Cagliari to make waste disposal easier.
Cagliari is preparing for a significant evolution in its urban waste management system with the introduction of the new automatic eco-islands.
These modern infrastructures designed to complement the collection system "door to door" of the Municipality and which "remains the main delivery system", aim to "make the differentiation process more efficient, accessible and simple for citizens", explained the mayor Paolo Truzzu.
Already 10 of the 35 automatic eco-islands, which will be strategically positioned in different areas of the city during 2024, will be operational by this month of March, offering a practical solution for those who cannot fully join the door-to-door system.
And thanks to advanced technologies they will allow automated separate collection, making it easier for residents to correctly dispose of paper and cardboard, plastic, glass, tin and cans, and organic waste. During this first phase, however, the provision of undifferentiated waste is excluded.
The introduction of this new and additional public service highlights the need to promote environmental sustainability while offering flexible options for citizens.
Be careful, though: even if each of them will make available between 5 and 10 containers, the new automatic eco-islands are sized to be used occasionally and on an extraordinary basis, when it is not possible to respect the days and times foreseen by the "door-to-door" collection calendar.
Therefore, each of them will be assigned a predefined group of users authorized for its access, explained councilor Alessandro Guarracino, reiterating what the mayor anticipated.
“Each user – anticipated the owner of Technological Innovation and Ambientand - you will then receive a communication with the indication of the specific eco-island of your reference", the only one where you can deliver the waste, which will be equipped with a user recognition system via the "ecocard", the same one used to access to other services offered by the municipal waste collection system, and an automatic limitation of access per calendar quarter (from 1 January to 31 March, from 1 April to 30 June, from 1 July to 30 September, from 1 October to 31 December). “Access to the automatic eco-islands is still permitted every day, for all 24 hours”.
Both the mayor Paolo Truzzu and the councilor Alessandro Guarracino they pointed out how “this initiative will be able to contribute to exceeding the 76% quota for separate waste collection, which has already rewarded Cagliari by placing it in second place among the most virtuous Italian capital cities”.
With the system "door to door", the two eco-centres in viale Sant'Elia and in via San Paolo, le “ecological courier”, “reuse center”, il “punctual tax”, the intensification of controls with the use of camera traps to combat waste abandonment and now the introduction of automatic eco-islands, Cagliari is demonstrating its commitment to "remaining at the forefront of sustainable waste management", projecting the Sardinian capital towards a more eco-friendly future and actively involving the community in this important transition.
Next objective: "Interventions to reduce unsorted waste from large users".
