Livorno, illegal purchase of exotic parrot: two people reported
A pensioner living in Rosignano Marittimo was reported as the buyer and a 29-year-old from Benevento as the seller. The parrot is an “Ara Ararauna”, a species protected by CITES regulations, meaning it can only be owned if you have the documents certifying legal importation.

As part of territorial control activities according to every aspect concerning it, also from the point of view of protecting and safeguarding the environment and animals, according to the appropriate operational synergies between the Provincial Carabinieri Command of Livorno and the specialized components of the force, the Forestry Carabinieri of CITES core (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) of Livorno, they reported a pensioner to the local judicial authority resident in the Municipality of Rosignano Marittimo and a 29 year old from Benevento.
In particular, the military seized a “Ara Ararauna”, un beautiful specimen of parrot protected by community regulations, since it was held without the required documentation which was to certify its legal ownership. The two men, according to the reconstruction of the Carabinieri, they would proceed with the sale of the parrot in the Benevento area, the 29 year old as seller and the pensioner as buyer and current owner.
It is a species protected by CITES legislation and included in Annex "B" of the regulation (EC) no. 338/1997, the whose detention without the required documentation is not authorised. The keeping of a parrot of the Ara Ararauna species is permitted, in fact, only if you are in possession of documents certifying reproduction in captivity or CITES certification proving legal importation.
In relation to the confirmed violation, the specimen was placed under evidential seizure and made available to the Judicial Authority together with the appointment of its judicial guardian.
Having ascertained all aspects of legitimate competence of the sectoral Armed Forces, the two individuals were reported at large to the Judicial Authority of Livorno competent for the foreseen cases of a crime relating to the possession of species protected by the Washington Convention without the required documentation.
