Wild boars on the Island of Elba, the Carabinieri: "Fines for those who feed them"
“The violation of this prohibition, which constitutes a crime, entails imprisonment from 2 months to 6 months or a fine from €516 to €2.065”
Wild boars on the Island of Elba, the Carabinieri: "Fines for anyone who feeds them".
In recent months, the Forestry Carabinieri of the "Tuscan Archipelago" have been engaged, together with other institutional bodies, to put a stop to the proliferation of wild boars on the Island of Elba.
While studies and evaluations are being carried out for the best management of the phenomenon, There have been reports of people feeding the wild boars, perhaps with the idea of carrying out a useful action.
The military, however, is keen to underline that il foraging (feed them) of wild boars, as well as being absolutely inadvisable for ethological reasons, i.e. linked to the biology of the species, it is expressly prohibited by Law 221 of 2015, which prohibits it, “with the exception of that aimed at control activities”. Violation of this prohibition, which constitutes a crime, entails imprisonment from 2 months to 6 months or a fine from €516 to €2.065.
The reasons why the legislator established this case are essentially three: first of all, the food given to wild boars is inappropriate and can harm the health of the animals; secondly, animals, due to this artificial nourishment, they are led to abandon their habitat and habits and come dangerously close to inhabited centers and arterial roads; finally, the practice of feeding wild animals encourages their reproduction in an uncontrolled manner with easily understandable negative consequences.
