Salento: Migrant trafficker wanted in Europe arrested.

Operation by the Carabinieri of Calimera and Lecce leads to the arrest of a 39-year-old Romanian wanted for international migrant trafficking and acts of violence.

In the evening of 25th December, while in many homes Christmas was celebrated, the Carabinieri of the Calimera Station, in collaboration with colleagues from the Lecce Mobile Radio Section, have carried out a major police operation. The action led to the arrest of a 39 year old Romanian citizen, wanted for serious crimes and recipient of a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by the Court of Arad in Romania.

The man was known for his involvement in the international migrant trafficking and for acts of violence. The 16 April 2024, the Romanian justice had sentenced him to serve a sentence of four years and two months of imprisonment. However, the trafficker had hidden in a masseria in the quiet countryside of Salento, hoping to escape the authorities.

The investigation and arrest
His arrival at the accommodation facility was regularly recorded in the database, as required by Italian law. This detail allowed the Carabinieri of the Salento Provincial Command to initiate in-depth investigations, including at an international level. The suspicions proved to be well-founded when the connection with a case of migrant trafficking dating back to August 2022, in which the man had hidden 31 Guests (21 Indians and 10 Bangladeshis) on a truck headed to Romania.

His criminal record also included a conviction for a brutal assault that occurred in August 2016, during which he had hit a victim with kicks and punches to the head.

The military planned the operation with extreme caution to avoid any possibility of escape. With promptness and determination, the 39enne he was arrested without resisting.

Justice takes its course
After the ritual formalities and the notification to the PM on duty of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Lecce, the man was transferred to the Lecce District Prison “Borgo San Nicola”, where it will remain available to the competent authorities.

This operation is an example of how the collaboration between law enforcement and the international cooperation can lead to significant results in the fight against crime.
