Vicenza, “Inside the mess tin”: nutrition in the Great War at the Museum of the Risorgimento
"Dentro la Gavetta" opens in Vicenza, an exhibition that explores the connection between food, faith and survival during the Great War, part of the exhibition 'Spirit and Body' spread across various museums in the Veneto.
The initiative, entitled “Inside the Gatta” is part of a widespread exhibition entitled “Spirit and body: faith and nutrition in the Great War” conceived by the MeVe of Montebelluna (Veneto Memorial of the Great War) as part of the project “The Infinite Great War”, promoted and supported by the Veneto Region with Regional Law no. 25 of 4 November 2022.
«We are inaugurating a new itinerary inside the Museum of the Risorgimento and Resistance of Vicenza – he announced the councilor for culture, tourism and attractiveness of the city Ilaria Fantin -, a small exhibition that is part of a more complex project involving six other museums in the Veneto region, including the MeVe in Montebelluna, the leader of the initiative supported by the Veneto Region. Until June, the objects kept in the display cases and the descriptive panels are available to schools, which thus have a new opportunity to visit our museum and the heritage it preserves, delving into the themes of hunger and thirst during the First World War in particular».
The councilor then concluded: «We are trying to make the Museum of the Risorgimento and the Resistance more attractive, whose collections represent a unique heritage at a national level and precisely for this purpose a competition will soon be published for the search for a curator who can take even more care of and enhance all this.».
He was present at the presentation of the initiative yesterday, together with the director of the Civic Museums of Vicenza Valeria Cafà, the director of the Veneto Memorial of the Great War of Montebelluna Monica Celi who stated: «Vicenza has accepted the proposal to be part of an itinerary that also involves the Third Army Museum of Padua, the Land Reclamation Museum of San Donà di Piave, the Civic Museum of the Armed Forces of Montecchio Maggiore, the Hemingway and Great War Museum of Bassano del Grappa, the Museum of the Great War "Forte Tre Sassi" of Cortina D'Ampezzo. It will thus be possible to discover the themes linked to faith and food in war in an exhibition spread throughout the regional territory».
The exhibition invites us to reflect on how faith and nutrition can be important keys to interpreting the conflicts of all times, including those of our contemporary era.
Each museum involved, through its own collections, takes on the task of exploring some of the themes covered in the widespread exhibition, offering visitors the opportunity to learn about places and institutions in our Region that preserve a rich heritage of relics from the Great War.
“Dentro alla gavetta” offers a journey through mess tins and canteens dedicated to the technical characteristics and anthropological aspects of these objects, indispensable for soldiers at war. All the objects – some canteens and mess tins of the Italian army, a pressure cooker for rations, period photographs, prints and other historical documents – They come from the archives of the Museum of the Risorgimento and the Resistance of Villa Guiccioli.
The exhibition will remain open until June 8, 2025.
It can be visited during the Museum's opening hours: from Thursday to Sunday from 10 am to 17 pm, last entry 30 minutes before closing. Free entry.
