Trieste: “Towards the peaks. Mountaineering in Trieste” on display at the Castello di San Giusto
70 years after the conquest of K2, the exhibition celebrates the history of mountaineering in Trieste, with protagonists such as Kugy, Comici and Marussi. Open until 8 June 2025, the exhibition explores two centuries of mountaineering feats.

From Friday 6 December until 8 June 2025, the exhibition “Verso le vette. L'alpinismo a Trieste” can be visited in the Bastione Fiorito of the Castello di San Giusto. in the following times:
10am-17pm Tuesday to Sunday until March 31st;
10am-19pm every day from April 1st.
70 years after the Italian conquest of K2, carried out in 1954 by the expedition of Ardito Desio in which the Trieste scientist Antonio Marussi also participated, the exhibition tells a century of history of mountaineering in Trieste through its main protagonists: among them Julius Kugy, Vladimir Dougan, Napoleone Cozzi, Emilio Comici, Guglielmo Delvecchio, Enzo Cozzolino, Bianca Di Beaco, Tiziana Weiss and many others.
The exhibition is composed of two sections: “K2 and Trieste” and “Mountaineering in Trieste”.
It is curated by Anna Krekic, curator of the Castle of San Giusto and the Risiera di San Sabba, and by Flavio Ghio, mountaineer and writer, making use of the collaboration and scientific advice of numerous scholars and experts.
It is created by the Municipality of Trieste – Historical Museums – San Giusto Castle Museum in collaboration with the main local organizations involved in mountaineering: the two Trieste sections of the Italian Alpine Club, the XXX Ottobre Association and the Alpine Society of the Julian Alps, and the Slovensko Planinsko Društvo Trst – SPDT.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a calendar of collateral events, currently being prepared, and the publication of the catalogue is expected soon.
Entrance is included in the ticket to the San Giusto Castle.
