Il Antares Astronomical Studies Center Trieste is pleased to present a cultural event of great importance in the national astronomical panorama that will take place in the Julian capital.

The exhibition will be open to visitors from 14 to 27 November 2024, with the following hours (weekdays and holidays): 10-13, 17-20. Free admission.

Produced by the Antares Trieste Astronomical Studies Centre in co-organisation with the Department of Culture and Tourism Policies of the Municipality of Trieste, with the contribution of ZKB – Gruppo CassaCentrale and Coop – Alleanza 3,0, with the patronage of the Unione Astrofililitaliani and the photographic prints provided by the local shop “Foto Mauro”, the exhibition is unique in its kind at a national level for the quantity and quality of the material exhibited. Multimedia in nature, the event will focus on images of great beauty and high scientific value taken by the members of the Antares Trieste Astronomical Studies Center using their own equipment.

Among astrophotographers, non-professional astronomers and professionals in the field, there are names of national and international fame.

Designed as a focal point of interest not only for astronomical science enthusiasts and occasional visitors but also for disabled people and school groups of all levels, “Looks into the Darkness of Light-Years – Astronomical Photography between Science and Art” It is part of the Association's mission to promote the study of Astronomy and its broad spectrum of disciplines through precise data acquisition in support of the images captured by the available instruments.

The photographs, printed in large format, portray all the objects that are part of the visible portion of the Universe (Sky-scapes, Solar System, multiple star systems, variable and peculiar stars, the Galaxy, star clusters and nebulae of various types, galactic groups and clusters) They were taken both from areas far from light pollution and from the city of Trieste itself.

Accurate descriptive panels will offer the opportunity to learn “on site” the particularities of the photographed objects as well as their position in the celestial vault. A special feature of the exhibition will also be to bring citizens to full knowledge of the nagging problem of light pollution.

Target of ""Looks into the darkness of light-years - Astronomical photography between science and art"" is to act as a mere interface between the cosmic wonders captured by astrophotographers and the visiting public, providing not only scientific information on the vast typology of astronomical objects photographed but also on the production techniques of the photographs themselves which, especially in the last 10 years, have made truly giant progress, allowing us to capture details that until recently were reserved only for large professional telescopes.

To complete, the presence of some of the instruments used in the photographic shots, the projection of videos with accompanying images, explanatory captions, a planetarium to represent the celestial vault and, obviously, the presence of staff from the Antares Trieste Astronomical Studies Centre to act as guides.

“Looks into the darkness of light-years – Astronomical photography between science and art” will be set up in the elegant setting of the “U. Veruda” room, located in Palazzo Costanzi, a few steps from the central Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia in Trieste.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on Wednesday 13 November at 18 pm, exhibition period: from 14 to 27 November 2024. Opening hours (weekdays and holidays): 10 am-13 pm, 17 pm-20 pm – free admission.
