Trieste: “Dinosaurs and much more: the new discoveries of the Fisherman's Village”, public meeting at the Urban Center
On September 24th at 17.30 pm at the Urban Center (Corso Cavour 2/2-XNUMXst floor) as part of the initiative “Waiting for the Researchers' Night"the public meeting took place"Dinosaurs and More: New Discoveries from the Fisherman's Village”, introduced by the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Trieste, Serena Tonel.
The researchers involved in the project – Diego Dreossi, Maurizio Polentarutti by Elettra Sincrotrone, the professor Federico Fanti, Marco Muscioni of the University of Bologna and Flavio Bacchia of Zoic srl – have illustrated in detail the outcome of these studies and much more: they have explained the preparation techniques, how the investigations were carried out and why the new discoveries are so important to continue studying the evolution of our territory.
The event represented an important opportunity to learn about the most recent discoveries in the field of paleontology and their relevance for the territory.
Thanks to the funds raised in 2021 by the Municipality of Trieste in collaboration with the Zoic company of Trieste – a world leader in paleontology, specialized in the extraction and processing of fossil remains, even of considerable proportions – a research group composed of from the University of Bologna, the University of Trieste, ISPRA, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and Zoic srl itself was able to analyze every single find extracted from the Fisherman's village, as if seen for the first time.
All the material has been examined by experts from different fields (anatomy, geology, chemistry, botany) to obtain an overall picture of the ecosystem that has been preserved on the site. This work, which combined data collected during the excavations with new discoveries, has allowed us to have a detailed picture of what we really know about the site and the animals and plants that it preserves.
During the study of the finds, some surprised us with the excellent quality of preservation not only externally but also internally. In other words, many fossils had only partially revealed their history to us because we had limited ourselves to studying their external form. In recent years, paleontologists have worked more and more with experts in tomographic scans, a tool that allows you to see the inside of fossilized bones in great detail without damaging them.
Thanks to the collaboration with Elettra Synchrotron Trieste It was possible to see the fossils of the Fishing Village as if the rock that preserved them was transparent.
The first investigation was done on the beak of Antonio, the famous Italian dinosaur found in the Villaggio del Pescatore, the experiment was a success and the researchers were able to reconstruct the complex system of blood vessels of a dinosaur extinct for 80 million years.
The second investigation focused on another specimen found on the Paleontological Site: It is the skull of a small crocodile called Acynodon. Although the appearance of Acynodon is very similar to that of modern crocodiles, its teeth are truly unique. It is thanks to the study of the teeth that it was possible to understand the type of diet of this strange creature, thus discovering the fauna present in the Cretaceous.
