Councillor Giorgio Rossi declared: “The exhibition is significantly set up in the North Wing of the Museo del Mare, finally realized as the first part of a more ambitious project that aims to always be moved by ideas and initiatives, similar to the waves of the sea. On behalf of the Municipal Administration I thank the organizers, who are points of reference for Trieste and are committed daily to scientific dissemination and the concrete protection of our environment. The exhibition is also ideally connected to the Diego De Henriquez War Museum for Peace, as De Henriquez himself was at the origin of the idea for the Trieste bathyscaphe operation, which descended into the Mariana Trench. A mix of suggestions linked to the sea are part of the profound identity of Trieste”.

“Chronicles from the Deep” is an art&science exhibition, organized by MareDireFare – Ocean Festival, born from an idea of WWF Miramare Marine Protected Area and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), co-organized by the Municipality of Trieste, the cultural association Museo della Bora and Editoriale Scienza; in collaboration with Trieste city of knowledge, Ibby Italia, Liceo artistica Max Fabiani, GeoAdriatico, Boramata, Trieste Bookfest and WWF YOUng; with the contribution of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Five young artists (Stefania Delponte, Paola Formica, Chiara Giorgiutti, Maria Luisa Petrarca, Paolo Primon) use the language of illustrations to tell some of the most mysterious aspects of the sea gradually: from the Gulf floor we expand to the Mediterranean, to then continue to the ocean ridges, the deep waters of the Antarctic and the Mariana Deep. A path of 20 tables, in dialogue with the words of science as well as with the photographs and videos taken during the ocean expeditions of the Schmidt Ocean Institute on some of the most remote seabeds on the planet.

The installation in the Marzari library of the Museo del Mare puts the works in relation to the permanently exhibited goods, which tell the story of man's relationship with the sea, such as the ROV Pluto UX, from 1980, progenitor of the homonymous family of robots for the exploration of the sea depths, donated to the Museum by the creator Eng. Guido Gay and Mrs. Gabriella Covacci.

The exhibition takes place on the occasion of the 9th IBBY (International Board on Books for Young people) International Congress scheduled in the spaces of Porto Vecchio – Porto Vivo from 30 August to 1 September, which will bring together in Trieste more than 600 authors, publishers, illustrators, librarians, pedagogists and scholars representing bodies and institutions involved in the world of children's books and in the promotion of reading from all over the world

The exhibition is also part of the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) proclaimed by the United Nations to raise awareness about the conservation and future of marine resources.
