The event is sponsored by the Municipality of Messina and coordinated in agreement with the Prefecture and the Associations awarded the honors of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, which will be attended by the Banner of the City with the Police in High Uniform.

The 227th anniversary of the birth of the Italian flag will be celebrated in Messina, Wednesday 10 January, at 9.30 am, at the Palacultura "Antonello".
The Tricolor Festival which occurs annually on January 7th, exceptionally in Messina it will be commemorated on January 10th, in consideration of the coincidence with the Sunday January 7th, to give secondary school students the opportunity to organize their participation upon their return from the Christmas holidays. The event was coordinated by the municipal administration in agreement with the Prefecture and the associations awarded the honors of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (OMRI).
The event will be kicked off by the national anthem, followed by institutional greetings from the prefect of Messina Cosima Di Stani, the mayor Federico Basile, the ANCRI regional president Pietro Bongiovanni, of the national president ANIOMRID Francesco Salvatore Franzetta, and the president of the Nastro Azzurro Institute - Provincial Federation of Messina Biagio Ricciardi. The work program, moderated by the national vice president ANIOMRID Silvana Paratore, includes interventions as speakers by Lieutenant Sebastiano Castorina of the 24th Rgt. Terrestrial Art “Peloritani” on the theme “Homeland and Nation for a new Italian Risorgimento. The meaning of the Flag for the Armed Forces”; and Professor Luigi D'Andrea, professor of the University of Messina who will discuss "The tricolor symbol of National Unity".
Tricolor Day was established by law n. 671 of 31 December 1996 with the intention of celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of the Italian flag in Reggio Emilia, which officially took place on 7 January 1797 with the official adoption of the Tricolor by the Cispadane Republic, a Napoleonic state born the previous year and dependent on the First French Republic .
The three Italian national colors appeared for the first time in Genoa on 21 August 1789 on the Italian tricolor cockade about a month after the outbreak of the French Revolution, the 11 October 1796 were first used in Milano on a military banner, but on 7 January 1797 in Reggio Emilia, for the first time, the Tricolor was officially adopted by a sovereign Italian state.
