Bari theater season, at the Piccinni Galatea Ranzi with the show “Anna Karenina”, directed by Luca De Fusco

From Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th January, as a regional exclusive for the theater season of the Municipality of Bari - Department of Culture in collaboration with the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese, Galatea Ranzi arrives at the Piccinni Theater with the show "Anna Karenina", directed by Luca De Fusco

This work aims to tell a segment of Leo Tolstoy's novel in a compact 90-minute show, with an essential scenography based on projections, according to a mechanism used several times by De Fusco with his usual collaborators.

“All happy families are the same, every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way: Tolstoy was right from the most well-known incipit in the history of Russian literature, on whose shoulders the nineteenth-century narrative genre weighs and, from Anna Karenina onwards, of the years to come – comments Culture Councilor Ines Pierucci -. If in the novel happiness is continually called into question by the natural fragility of the protagonists grappling with hypocrisy, jealousy, faith, loyalty, family, marriage, passion, society and progress, in the reality in which The work looks at happy moments determined by the cultural dynamics that create happiness in family contexts. We wanted to include this show in Piccinni's prose season to give space to the great narrative theater that Tolstoy's masterpiece of realism inspired. With Anna Karenina we can see how historical events, such as the Serbian-Ottoman wars of the time, influence the culture and literature of all times".

One of the best novels important in the history of literature is brought to the stage in a very particular period of the relationship between the our culture and the Russian one. It is a cultural policy choice to distinguish between political dissent over Russian state action and the enthusiastic consensus that Western European culture owes to Russian culture and literature.

Naturally, one cannot expect to transfer all the psychological and narrative complexities of a masterpiece like Anna Karenina into a theatrical show. The choice was to focus on events that revolve around the protagonist, being able to count on the great talent of Galatea Ranzi, and on the mechanisms behind the three couples, metaphors of three destinies: the cursed but passionate one of Anna, Vronjskij and Karenin, the bitter and unsuccessful one of Stiva and Dolli, and the serene and blessed one of Levin and Kitty.
