La Spezia: Everything is ready for the inauguration of the new exhibition at the A. Lia Museum.

The exhibition will be inaugurated today, Friday 16 June at 17.30 pm Peter Brueghel the Younger. The Crucifixion of Castelnuovo Magra. Restoration and comparisons at the Amedeo Lia Civic Museum curated by Rossana Vitiello, with the collaboration of Andrea Marmori, Valentina Tonini and Martina Avogadro.

The exhibition was created with the aim of showing the public the significant works of Flemish art, but it will be an opportunity to present the important painting by Pieter Brueghel the Younger after the study and restoration work on the painting of the Crucifixion carried out at the laboratory of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Genoa and the province of La Spezia, in collaboration with the University of Genoa regarding diagnostic investigations on the work. In particular, the historical-artistic events of the painting and the problems relating to its protection will be made known, the troubled history of the conservation events of the work, the theft and discovery of the panel in the 1970s and the recent theft attempt foiled thanks to intervention of the Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Genoa.

The Mayor of La Spezia Pierluigi Peracchini declares: “The Crucifixion by Peter Brueghel the Younger is a painting of inestimable value, a masterpiece of Flemish art and beyond. We are happy to be able to present it on the occasion of this exhibition, which displays works from the same school. Its restoration is a significant event and for our city it is an honor to be able to have the work on display after the theft attempt in March 2019 and to show the public how it was restored. It is significant to remember the story of the attempted theft of the painting from the church of Castelnuovo Magra which was foiled thanks to the collaboration and intelligence of the Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Genoa, of Don Alessandro Chiantaretto, of the Diocese, whom I particularly thank. On this occasion I thank the Lia family for the renewal of the agreement, which now allows the relaunch of the museum with important exhibitions, the first of which is this one by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, which we will inaugurate on Friday 16 June and which will be full of surprises" .

The exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of La Spezia with the patronage of the Liguria Region, the Archaeological Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape for the Metropolitan City of Genoa and the Province of La Spezia, the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and was created with the contribution of the Carispezia Foundation for the restoration intervention as part of the 2021 Open Call in favor of the Santa Maria Maddalena Parish in Castelnuovo Magra and the support of Coop Liguria.
