The permanent exhibition presented at the Regional Museum of Messina “1908 CityMuseumCity” dedicated to the earthquake that changed the face of the City of the Strait. Opening to the public on November 28th
The Regional Councillors Scarpinato and Amata, the Hon. Antonio De Luca and the Director of the Micali Museum explained the details of this project. It was announced that the BB.CC Department. and IS has started the process to name the Messina Museum after Maria Accascina.
18 November – The permanent exhibition “1908 CittàMuseoCittà” was officially presented at the Accascina Regional Museum in Messina and will be open to the public from Tuesday 28 November.
For this exhibition, which will develop over an area of 1000 square metres, the spaces of the former headquarters of the National Museum (former Filanda Mellinghoff) will be used.
Numerous finds recovered after the earthquake will be exhibited and new technologies will have a decisive role, given the presence of a immersive room and augmented virtual reality.
The meeting was opened by Orazio Micali, Director of the Regional Museum, who announced: “This will be an exhibition of artefacts in which you can touch and embrace the history of this city through its architectural and artistic elements, but it is also an exhibition that will allow the visitor to enter the city that no longer exists. A city reconstructed from life and, within this, being able to move and get to know it through augmented reality. You will also be able to experience the seismic event and experience the transition between the 'before' and the 'after' the tragic earthquake. A completely new and particularly exciting way to realize what this event has taken away from us physically, as well as the immaterial things it has taken from us."
The Regional Councilor for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, Francesco Paolo Scarpinato said: “Today is an important day because we have shown how, by joining forces and without political color, important things can be achieved. The exhibition which will be inaugurated on November 28th is a clear example. A synergistic path that gave life to an exhibition that has a physical and a virtual part, to let everyone know what Messina was really like before the earthquake. I take this opportunity to announce that, in my Department, the process to name this Museum after Maria Accascina has begun. She was one of the first female museum directors and was head of the one in Messina from 1949 to 1963".
The Hon. Antonio DeLuca he retraced the troubled process of his law which established the regional Messina earthquake day and which made it possible to finance this exhibition with 300 thousand euros allocated on the proposal of De Luca himself in the budget, adding: “I remember that, when the centenary was celebrated in 2008, Messina wasted a great opportunity and did not create any economic circuit. It seemed as if the city did not want to make peace with its history. This is an exhibition that not only has tourist purposes, but also and above all social and identity purposes. I am proud to have completed this path that no one had ever undertaken in all these years and, special thanks go to Director Micali who was able to carry out this project. My desire is to involve the various institutions to create a virtuous circuit so that initiatives can be developed to create culture, moments of in-depth analysis, entertainment and the economy".
The Regional Councilor for Tourism, Sport and Entertainment, Hon. Elvira Beloved highlighted how “Politics has the duty to unite to bring concrete actions to the territories and today's action is an example of how this can be done. It is certainly an important moment for the city of Messina, for all the people of Messina and for our young people. Unfortunately, our history was erased in a few hours by a terrible earthquake in which thousands of people from Messina lost their lives. With the setting up of this permanent exhibition, thanks to the finds that have been saved and the immersive room, we want to tell the story of our city before 1908 not only as a sign of remembrance and the preservation of memory, but above all to be aware of the our identity. I'm sure we will have strong emotions. I would add that all this also has a strong value as a tourist attraction and I am sure that many travelers will stop in Messina out of curiosity to visit the exhibition. It is our duty to create more and more moments like this, in which politics together with all the stakeholders, first and foremost the citizens, join forces to give concrete answers to the city".
The “1908 CittàMuseoCittà” exhibition is created in collaboration with Capitale Cultura, one of the most active companies in the sector of augmented reality, 3D reconstructions and immersive visits. The displays are curated by Floridia Allestimenti, the electrical and special systems are by Gaetano Previti and the promotion of the event is entrusted to the Sincromie creative studio.
