The Animus project “Theatre in prison” begins at the Castelvetrano prison.

Trapani, Given that the value of the theater work in prison, its artistic results and its role in re-educational treatment now represent a heritage of consolidated acquisitions; the theatre, in secluded places, it's not just a leisure activity, but it plays an important role therapeutic value, it acts profoundly and implies a path of awareness that is individual and collective at the same time, the laboratory activity of theatre has a profound impact on those who practice it.

In many penal institutions, theatrical activity is used as a method promotes social inclusion, between the prison institution and civil society, with particular attention to the result found in the reduction in recidivism among prisoners who dedicate themselves to theatre, where stands at 6%, compared to 65% of those who have never participated, and once released, return to commit crimes. The theater workshops in prison also prove to be aactivities capable of overcoming the feeling of helplessness and of disesteem in which the prisoner finds himself due to the absence of stimuli, the time that has passed, the sense of uselessness and loss of his own identity.

In light of the re-educational benefits narrated above, the "Anti-violence desk" of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Marsala, with the patronage ofNational Association of Magistrates – Subsection of Marsala, at the beginning of this year proposed a theater workshop at the Castelvetrano Prison who, sharing its value, allowed the realization of the proposed project in which the prisoners who voluntarily joined the initiative are the protagonists.

Given the need to entrust the artistic realization of the theater laboratory to professionals, the task of developing a specific theater project was given to theSkenè Cultural Association of Marsala who, free of charge, drew up an appropriate project and took care of its implementation.

In view of the foregoing, we communicate to Press agencies and Information present in the territory which, on 02 October 2023 at 17.00 pm, At the Castelvetrano Prison a theatrical show will be staged for the first time, starring the same inmates participating in the workshop, entitled “Shakespeare in 90 minutes”.

We inform you right now that inside the penitentiary facility it will not be possible introduce accessories such as bags, suitcases, etc. and electronic devices such as mobile phones, video cameras, etc. in the event that the aforementioned accessories or devices are brought along, they will be placed in boxes located at the entrance of the structure. Any filming or recording of interviews may be carried out outside the security walls of the prison.
