Terni, the Giro d'Italia: the twelfth edition of the "safety heroes".

With the Giro d'Italia the awards for the Security Heroes start again, an initiative now in its twelfth edition, born from the collaboration between the State Police and Autostrade per l'Italia, to enhance the work of the agents and motorway workers who patrol every day the traffic on the high-flow arteries along the country.

At the start of the "Corsa Rosa", in Terni, the Assistant Chief Coordinators of the State Police Giuseppe Varone and Gianluca Napoli were awarded. The Traffic Police instead awarded recognition for the commitment shown in his work to the operations operator Simone Cecchini, for having coolly managed traffic and user rescue operations following an accident.

During the various stages of the Giro, the sports awards stage will host 20 operators from the Traffic Police, with whom ASPI works in close collaboration on a daily basis to guarantee the safety of users traveling on the motorways. At the same time, the Traffic Police will award recognition along the stages from the South to the North of Italy to 10 operators of the Autostrade per l'Italia Group who have demonstrated strong dedication to their work, putting skills and commitment at the service of users that are well suited beyond their daily duties.

The stories:

Last December, on the A12 Rome Civitavecchia, a serious collision occurred involving multiple vehicles. An accident that causes victims and injuries. Simone Cecchini, route technician of the Roma 1 Operations Center in Aspi, in those delicate moments, manages to manage the immediate closure of the motorway section by organizing the obligatory exit at the Maccarese station and thus preventing the arrival of other vehicles. Together with colleagues and Traffic Police staff, the operator was always at the forefront in organizing all operations, with responsibility and a sense of duty.

The Assistant Chief Coordinators of the State Police Giuseppe Varone and Gianluca Napoli, on 11 April 2022, were on road surveillance duty on the A12 when, during a regular check on a lorry driven by a foreign citizen, they noticed that the driver, once he got back into the vehicle, he felt ill, with his head turned backwards, and did not respond to solicitations. Having sensed the gravity of the situation, the two policemen removed the man from the cockpit and placed him on the ground and immediately performed cardiac massage while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Once help arrived, the doctors immediately realized that it was a heart attack in progress which required the intervention of an air ambulance. The promptness of the two officers saved the driver's life.
