Teramo: appointment Friday 4 October, Matteo Bassetti presents his latest book “Pinocchi in camice”
An important event has been organized by the municipal administration of Teramo for the next 4 October. At 18.00 in the internal courtyard of the Melchiorre Delfico library: the prof. Matthew Bassetti, infectious disease specialist, researcher and medical-scientific communicator will present his latest book “Pinocchios in shirts".
This is a work by a well-known expert on the widespread reality of doctors, pseudo-doctors, pharmacists, nurses, nutritionists, osteopaths who, in bad faith, for easy gain or out of ignorance, they lie to their patients, making them believe that they can solve their problems with therapies that have no scientific basis. Fraudulent activities that often use the Internet to spread.
The book, however, is not limited to a mere denunciation of a widespread corruption but is conceived and created to give answers to patients who every day hear stories of miraculous remedies for their health problems.
So, Matteo Bassetti retraces the most famous stories of treatments that have proven ineffective or harmful, the most blatant scams and the mechanisms through which some supposed luminaries have often enjoyed the applause and defense of institutions and the media. From Covid to homeopathy, from miracle diets to Stamina, from the Di Bella method to the excessive use of antibiotics: a sample of beliefs and supposed truths which in recent decades have deluded, deceived or simply distorted cures and treatments.
Bassetti marks a clear line of separation between what is scientifically proven and what falls within the realm of speculation, if not of the actual one fraud, also thanks to the testimonies of authoritative exponents of the world of information and science; to do this it makes use of the contribution of important professionals: from Bruno Vespa a Ilaria Capua, to name a few, but also ordinary citizens.
MATTEO BASSETTI Infectiologist, researcher and medical-scientific communicator, he is Full Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Genoa and Director of the Infectious Diseases Department at the San Martino Hospital in Genoa. Piemme has published The world belongs to microbes (2022)
The meeting organized by the municipal administration will be held Thursday October 4 pm 18.30 at the internal courtyard of the Melchiorre Delfico library. The professor himself will be present. Bassetti, who will be interviewed by the journalist Antonella Formisani.
