The Global Fusion Energy Group – which is established and convened for the first time in Rome, on the initiative of Italy and the IAEA, aims to bring together the most important representatives of the public and private sectors, industry, academia, research institutions and civil society. The aim is to stimulate a collaborative effort focused on research, development and practical applications of fusion energy, with the ultimate goal of accelerating the transition of fusion energy from the current research phase to commercial development.
The Group will act as a catalyst, at a time when it is essential to aggregate efforts to rapidly advance the development of fusion energy, focusing its attention on some main topics, including:
- il Strengthening global cooperation, in particular by establishing coordination modalities and spaces for interactive dialogue, exchange, planning and structuring partnerships between all stakeholders (governments, private sector, academia and research, regulatory bodies and civil society);
- the effectiveness of research and development programs on fusion energy, both by making use of existing collaborations and structures and by planning new ones;
- the joint identification of existing technological and engineering gaps and the development of strategies for finding solutions at an international level;
- la regulatory of technology of the merger at the international level;
- il audience involvement, with particular attention to younger generations and gender equality;
- the integration of the merger into energy market;
- the integration of the merger in existing energy systems, including supporting infrastructure.
With the "National Platform for Sustainable Nuclear“, established by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, the Italian Government has started a process to evaluate the opportunity to resume the use of nuclear energy in Italy, both in the short-medium term through new nuclear fission technologies, and in the medium-long term with fusion energy, also with a view to achieving the 2050 decarbonisation targets and in order to increase the security and sustainability of energy supplies. The aim of the Platform is to bring together all the most important Italian skills in the nuclear sector, from operators to end users, from universities to research centres, from Ministries and other public bodies to trade associations, summarising the various national initiatives.
