“Sport in the age of social networks”, Mazzeo compared with the Tuscan champions
The impact of social media on the world of sport, the direct experiences of athletes and public figures, to understand how social networks are transforming sports communication, the relationship with fans, professional opportunities, risks related to the mental health of athletes. This was discussed in the meeting 'Sport in the age of social networks', which was held on Friday 11 October in Pisa at the Le Benedettine Congress Centre, within the Internet festival 2024. The President of the Regional Council participated, Antonio Mazzeo, Leonardo Fabbri, national record holder and reigning European champion in shot put, Julia Pisani, former volleyball player, now sports commentator and manager, Filippo Macchi, winner of two silver medals in foil at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The debate was conducted by the journalist Veronica Maffei.
“Technologies can be a place of opportunities, if they are known and if they become available to everyone – said the president Mazzeo on the sidelines of the meeting, organized by the Regional Council of Tuscany –. We have called with us well-known faces from the world of sports, because our goal is to bring technology as close as possible to people. Pippo Macchi, two silver medals at the Olympics, Giulia Pisani, who told the story of the great ride of the women's national volleyball team and Leonardo Fabbri, who made us fall in love with the shot put with his European record and with his outreach on social media”.
“I think it is very important to be able to show that behind a top-level athlete there is still a person with his problems and difficulties,” he said. Julia Pisani. In the management of social networks, "there must be a line, to avoid it resulting in unpleasant situations, in which unpleasant comments take place and fans turn into keyboard warriors".
“With the development of social media, we athletes have great visibility and therefore also a lot of responsibility – he explained Filippo Macchi –. We are called to be points of reference, examples for the kids who play sports. You have to know how to win and also how to lose, follow the important values that must be transmitted first of all to the kids. Being able to share and show what one is: this is what you have to look for when using social networks”.
“One of the best things about social media is that it allows us to show people that in addition to being athletes, we are kids like everyone else, with our bad moments, our bad days,” he added. Leonardo Fabbri. It is thanks to his results and also to his social activity that "people are starting to understand and watch the shot put. I try to show the work that is needed day after day to arrive prepared for the competition on the platform".
