PRIMORDIAL RED | Personal exhibition by Armando Xhomo at the MA-EC Gallery in Milano.
From 19 March to 2 April 2024, the solo exhibition of the artist Armando Xhomo entitled Rosso Primordiale will be held at the MA-EC Gallery, curated by the art historian and journalist Daniela Pronestì.
On display is a selection of works, some of which are the latest creations, which invite us to rediscover a dimension, that of "primordiality", understood as a vital, generative condition, an expression of the energy that moves both the existence and the actions of the artist.
"Red - writes the curator Daniela Pronestì in the text that accompanies the exhibition – it is the color of primitive impulses, of erotic corporeity, of vital force. It is the color of the instinct that allowed early man to feed himself, defend himself and preserve the species. The color of blood shed for survival, dominance, conquest. A color that in Armando Xhomo's works recalls the duality between eros and thanatos, order and chaos, human and feral. Opposites that in Xhomo's painting do not reach a balance, but express the unresolvable tension at the origin of life".
In Xhomo's painting, color is the first and main medium of this "tension": «magmatic color – adds the curator – powerful, visceral, to suggest the conflictuality of existence, the everlasting struggle between life and death, thought and impulse, darkness and light. We move from chromatic peaks of extreme vitality, of immoderate passion, to colder, darker and more intimate shades, with a deliberately dry, abrupt progression, without the intermediary of intermediate tones".
The same importance is attributed to the gesture which becomes «impetuous, disruptive action that now traces vortices, with large and enveloping movements, now instead broken lines, segments and diagonals», in a dynamism that holds together baroque ancestry and futuristic lines of force.
«An irresistible energy catapults the gaze towards the center of the work – continues Daniela Pronestì –, in the arena of struggle, in the beating heart of the clash between good and evil. There is no escape, there is no way to escape from that blood-red arena: it is there that everything is played out, that the fate of the world is determined; yesterday as today, and as always, it is in the battle that life is nourished. And from the bull, an explicit reference to an unbridled instinctuality, the artist's journey goes beyond time, to encounter, through the figure of the Minotaur, the darkest, wildest, most ambivalent part of human nature." Red, therefore, is not only a color in Xhomo's painting but «an ancient, underground, primordial force that manifests itself in the attraction between two bodies, in the sensuality exhibited, in the rivalry of man against man, but also, and in an equally overwhelming way, in the artist's creation."

There is a powerful range of colors that fills Armando Xhomo's paintings, colors far from reality, unnatural, imagined from within, from the depths rather than from the precision of the artist's eye. But this unreality that pours out is almost a veil, under which the drawing pervades: the starting point for Xhomo, the first trait that outlines and creates black from white, being from non-being. Having worked in theaters, Xhomo's painting pays particular attention to the compositional aspects of the scene, with powerful dynamic lines ranging from the diagonals of Baroque art to the force lines of Futurist art. He works and exhibits in his gallery in via Ghibellina in Florence.
