“New Mobility Messina 2023”: an extraordinary edition has ended

The curtain has fallen on the second edition “New Mobility Messina 2023”. An event that significantly enriched the Christmas events promoted by the Municipality of Messina, attracting thousands of citizens to the pedestrian area of Viale San Martino and Piazza Cairoli. It was a "four days" intense with events and initiatives, culminating with the long-awaited “Challenge of the Strait”, the spectacular competition which featured the well-known television personality Jimmy Ghione, the mayors of Messina and Villa San Giovanni, Federico Basile and Giusy Caminiti, and then the actress Giovanna Sannino (protagonist of the fiction Mare Fuori), the Olympic champion Silvia Bosurgi and the manager Andrea Gibelli, president of FNM SpA and ASSTRA. “New Mobility Messina 2023” was organized by ATM Messina on behalf of the Municipality of Messina, with the support of the European Union (Structural and Investment Funds), the Territorial Cohesion Agency and thanks to funding under the PON Metro .

Furthermore, numerous initiatives took place from 14 to 17 December, in addition to the exhibition of electric vehicles along the pedestrian area, between viale San Martino and piazza Cairoli, visitors were able to admire and try out cars, motorbikes, bicycles, scooters and electric scooters to discover the advantages deriving from the mobility means of the future.

Authentic "lighthouse" of the event was the display of a brand new DS single-seater, which participates in the Formula E World Championship, which for the first time was shown in public in the city of the Strait, as well as the Ducati motorcycle which gave life to the Moto E World Championship; and also, present with dedicated stands, the brand new electric buses of ATM Messina and the special vehicles of the Law Enforcement and Armed Forces. Also on display is the first electric car made in Italy entirely by students and teachers of the Verona Trento Institute with recycled material, renewable photovoltaic and wind sources and innovative batteries supplied by the CNR ITAE of Messina, as part of the project MEME – Electric Mobility for an eco-sustainable Messina. Also worth mentioning is the contribution of the students of the Basile and Seguenza high schools who took care of the decoration of the cars in which Jimmy Ghione and Giovanna Sannino competed.

“Promoting change through a strategic program for a new model of vehicular flow management is what we are carrying out in synergy with the Municipality and Atm SpA to lead Messina towards increasingly sustainable mobility that is well reconciled with the needs of the community that lives the city. From this perspective, and thanks to the Christmas period, we have tried to convey this message of awareness of change through the staging of initiatives as part of the New Mobility Messina 2023 event, making known, even in a playful way, how much bicycles, scooters and vehicles of the micromobility offers in terms of convenience for moving around the city while respecting the environment at the same time", commented the mayor Federico Basile.

Deputy Mayor Salvatore Mondello, also in his capacity as Councilor for Urban Mobility, added "the event, beyond the recreational and sporting aspect, is the result of long programming and planning work which continuously from 2018 to today has allowed this Administration to carry out important steps forward in sustainable city mobility.

“The second edition of New Mobility Messina it was a great success and we can only be proud of the absolutely positive outcome. Starting today we will start working for the 2024 edition, as the objective of the Messina Transport Company is to transform this event into a fixed annual event, capable of raising awareness among citizens on the issues of sustainable mobility, creating entertainment and attract tourism”, declared the president of ATM Messina Giuseppe Campagna at the end of the event.
