Monza, reworking of mobility in the post Covid, 3 new cycle paths
Monza, redesigns mobility in the post-Covid era. The Council, in its meeting on Tuesday 23 June, approved a project for the construction of three "cycle lanes" which is underway Milano, via Boito and via Mentana.
An opportunity for a new mobility. «The idea – explains Mayor Dario Allevi – was born from the need to reserve more space for so-called soft mobility». A decision dictated by the emergency of the situation and designed with a view to preventing citizens from taking their own cars given that public transport can accommodate fewer passengers than before the pandemic due to safety measures and distance between people to observe. «It is an opportunity to be seized – continues the Mayor – to accelerate the process of transformation of the city. It is an unmissable opportunity to carry forward those policies on soft mobility that are so important to us."
A «network» for two wheels. For this reason the Municipal Administration has developed a plan which envisages dedicating a lane to bicycles on three important city arteries and creating a real "network" for two wheels without introducing too many traffic restrictions. To create continuity with the existing cycle "network" and guarantee the connection with some "sensitive" points of the city, such as the railway station, the hospital, the historic center and the future Monza Bettola metro station, three roads have been identified : course Milano – via Borgazzi to connect the center of Monza with the cycle path currently under construction to reach the future Monza Bettola metro station; via Mentana to connect the eastern part of the city to the railway station; via Boito – via Pergolesi – via Ramazzotti to connect the city center with the hospital. Today in Monza we have around 40 kilometers of cycle paths, 4,2 kilometers under construction and another 40 potential kilometers on which it is possible to carry out interventions with signage alone.
The project . The three cycle routes are located in an urban context, i.e. on roads where the maximum speed allowed for vehicles is 50 km/h. The project therefore envisages the creation of the so-called "cycle lanes", as introduced by Legislative Decree no. 34 of 19 May 2020 - known as the "Relaunch Decree". For this reason, horizontal signs are planned for a total of 4.500 meters of roads, the installation of approximately 100 "pictograms" with the image of a bicycle, with the consequent adaptation of pedestrian crossings on the roads subject to intervention. The project also provides for the possibility of drawing two "advanced houses", i.e. the stop lines for bicycles in an advanced position compared to the stop lane for all other vehicles. This is to ensure greater protection for cyclists. The project, whose cost is estimated between 16 and 20 thousand euros, was entrusted to «Monza Mobilità».
Another piece to build a "soft mobility" network. «The three cycle lanes – explains the Councilor for Mobility Federico Arena – are a further piece that completes the puzzle of soft mobility that we have been building in recent months and on which we have been working since before the Covid emergency broke out. We have strengthened the bike sharing stations, we have introduced the rental of electric scooters and we are working on the new cycle path of via Aquileia via Montesanto - viale Fermi which will connect to that of Brumosa. The one in via Borgazzi is also under construction. In particular with the Corso cycle lane Milano we give a concrete answer to the many commuters who ask us for valid alternatives for home/work travel: once the project has been completed, citizens will be able to reach Monza Bettola from the center by bicycle. The three lanes reserved for bicycles under development are an opportunity to support gentle mobility, but also to introduce road safety measures for pedestrians."
