Milano, women at center stage: discussion, sharing, role of women

Comparison, sharing, role of women. These few clear watchwords have marked the recent course of the Carcano Theatre, entrusted from 2021 to the direction of three women: Lella Costa and Serena Sinigaglia, essential points of reference in the cultural life of the city - as artistic director, and Mariangela Pitturru as complete the triad with the task of synthesizing the artistic and design visions by translating them into the programming.

The centrality of the female universe, the attention to the most urgent contemporary issues and the transversal and dialectical position in choices and points of view are the common threads that have woven the plots of the last three theater seasons. The Carcan Theater it is therefore confirming itself not only as a place of entertainment, but as a catalyst for meaningful conversations, a beacon for critical reflection that illuminates voices and stories. This is also demonstrated by the incredible turnout at the Monday shows, Follow the Monday: 25 appointments to think and dialogue, a Carcano-branded version of the ancient symposium in which writers, journalists, historians, popularizers and philosophers take turns proposing reflections and ideas that can orient us in these bizarre times of ours through unusual stage lessons.

Milano, le donne al centro della scena: confronto, condivisione, ruolo delle donne

In order to more powerfully amplify these important stories and messages, now more than ever, we want to highlight a series of shows that explore the many facets of the challenges women face and that reflect on how society perceives them. These performances are not simple representations, but rather profound invitations to live an experience that is configured as one critical mirror on current events.

Scheduled from January 31st to February 4th TOP GIRLS (Fondazione Teatro Due di Parma production, directed by Monica Nappo) by Caryl Churchill, the English playwright known for her unconventional historical and costume comedies, alien to any form of didacticism. The text addresses the inescapability of comparison in a structural way with the male model in the exercise of power and its contradictions.

Last year we decided to do an experiment with the Theater of Dionysus: propose the show WAKE UP, with eight actresses on stage who reveal themselves, even physically, to the vision of those who observe them. It was a somewhat carbonaro act, the playwright and director Silvia Gallerano immediately understood that only women could enter the room, so as not to contaminate the ritual of common feeling from which the catharsis promoted by the theater is born. The experiment was a success, a necessary liberating moment. This year we are presenting it again in four performances from 8 to 11 February in collaboration with the Humanitas per lei center of the San Pio for women, revealing oneself is a prelude to treatment. From taboos that sicken the soul, from diseases that attack the bodies.

Silvia Gallerano is also the protagonist of a theater performance that won the Edinburgh Fringe and achieved enormous success with audiences and critics all over the world: THE SHIT by Cristian Ceresoli (February 12), a phenomenon that has long broken the boundaries of the theater and is welcomed almost as if it were a rock concert. Shit manifests itself as a poetic stream of consciousness where the bulimic and revolting public confidence of one is unleashed “young” “ugly” woman who tries with obstinacy, resistance and courage to make his way into the society of Thighs and Freedoms.

On March 4th we will meet the gaze of Carlotta Vagnoli, writer and activist, who summarizes in a unpublished monologue her point of view on the role of women in today's society.

On stage from 8 to 10 March SHUT UP! (co-produced together with SCARTI and LaQ-Prod), taken from the text of the same name by Michela Murgia, which addresses feminist issues with the credibility given by the commitment of the actresses/activists Antonella Questa, Valentina Melis and Teresa Cinque, inviting fight gender stereotypes. The "phrases that we no longer want to hear" contained in the book offer the opportunity to talk about contemporary society through a series of characters and surreal situations.

And many other phrases of this same type are the object of satire of the format created and conducted by Serena Dandini and produced by us COME FORWARD YOU MOTHER, NEXT! (from 10 to 12 May) where actresses of proven comedy such as Martina Dell'Ombra/Federica Cacciola, Annagaia Marchioro, Germana Pasquero and Rita Pelusio celebrate female "idiocy", an exclamation that may seem audacious in these times but perfectly in line with the long uphill road of women's emancipation.
