Milano: Nureyev's “Lake” returns to La Scala Theater, from 15 to 27 September
On September 27th the ballet will be live streaming on LaScalaTV.
Milano: Teatro La Scala Nureyev's "Lake" returns, from 15 to 27 September sold out for the ten scheduled performances.
With the company Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake in Rudolf Nureyev's choreographic version the Company's activity resumes after the summer holidays. After the great success and standing ovation at the Les Chorégies d'Orange Festival, where the Company presented the second act in July, the ballet will now return to the stage at La Scala, in the precious and historic staging designed by Ezio Frigerio and Franca Squarciapino. Sold out for the ten scheduled performances, which will see alternating artists from La Scala and famous guests. In the main roles of Odette/Odile and Siegfried Nicoletta Manni and Timofej Andrijashenko (in the opening performance on 15 and then 19 September), Martina Arduino and Claudio Coviello (16 and 20 September), Alice Mariani and Mattia Semperboni (21 and 23 September ), Maria Celeste Losa and Navrin Turnbull (25 and 27 September). In the performances of 22 and 26 September, Jacopo Tissi and Olga Smirnova, international star, prima ballerina at the Dutch National Ballet (Het Nationale Ballet), for the first time at La Scala. The double role of the tutor Wolfgang and the magician Rothbart will be played by Marco Agostino, Christian Fagetti, Gabriele Corrado and Emanuele Cazzato during the various performances, which will be a splendid opportunity for many artists to try their hand at the many roles and in the many moments together of the ballet. On the podium Koen Kessels conducting the Orchestra of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala.
And with the return of the ballet to the stage, the programming of the LaScalaTV platform also resumes, with live coverage of the final performance of Swan Lake on 27 September. A further opportunity is also added to the streaming of the show, reserved for schools, in the Educational section of the platform: the possibility of following, live and with an introduction by Mario Acampa, the ensemble rehearsal of 11 September, with a free connection on reservation starting from 13pm.
To find out more, on September 12th at 18pm at the Ridotto dei Palchi “A. Toscanini" will take place the usual event of the "Prima delle premiere - Ballet" cycle created by Teatro alla Scala in collaboration with Amici della Scala: Valentina Bonelli will introduce the ballet in the meeting entitled Menzogna e sorcelegio nel classical imperiale.
The performances will continue in October at the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari: for seven performances from 3 to 8 October, Nureyev's Lake will return to the stage that has already welcomed the Scala Company in the past. On stage the principal dancers, the soloists and the artists of the Corps de Ballet, with the baton of Kevin Rhodes conducting the Orchestra of the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari.
“Swan Lake is for me a long dream of the prince who, nourished by romantic readings that have exalted his desire for the infinite, rejects the reality of the power and marriage that his mother and tutor impose on him. It is he, therefore, who, to escape the melancholy fate that awaits him, brings the vision of the lake into his life. An idealized love and the prohibition that it entails are born in his mind: hence the black swan and Rothbart, mirror figures, negative transpositions of the white swan and the tutor. When the dream fades, the prince's reason will not survive."
After having staged his first Swan Lake at the Wiener Staatsoper in 1964, Nureyev would stage his definitive production of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece twenty years later, as director of the Ball at the Paris Opera. This same production will enter the repertoire of the Teatro alla Scala from 1990. When "his" Lago di lui arrives at La Scala in 1990, Nureyev is also on stage, and keeps the key, equivocal, mirror role of Wolfgang / Rothbart for himself. But it is for the Prince that Nureyev created arduous variations, placing him at the center of all the dramaturgical lines. In Rudolf Nureyev's reading, the absolute protagonist is Siegfried, a romantic prince with a melancholic rather than heroic, contemplative and meditative soul. An introspective and complex version on a technical and interpretative level, a total tragedy that leaves no room for a happy ending or heroic redemption.
