Milano: the exhibition “Munch. The Inner Cry” opens to the public at Palazzo Reale
From Saturday 14th September to 26th January 2025 Royal Palace hosts "Munch. The Inner Cry“, a large retrospective celebrating Edvard Munch (Norway, 1863 -1944) with a career path of 100 works exceptionally provided by the Munch Museum in Oslo, which will tell the artist's entire human and artistic journey, exhibiting some of the most famous and iconic works in the history of art.
Curated by Patricia G. Berman, one of the greatest scholars of Munch, in collaboration with Costantino D'Orazio for support in the drafting of in-depth texts, the exhibition is promoted by City of Milano - Culture under the patronage of Ministry of Culture and Royal Norwegian Embassy in Rome, and is produced by Royal Palace e artemisia in collaboration with the MUNCH Museum in Oslo.
An undisputed protagonist in the history of modern art and one of the main artists of the 19th century, Munch is considered a precursor of Expressionism, as well as a master in interpreting the deepest anguish and aspirations of the human soul. His gazeless faces, his dazed landscapes, his powerful use of color, his need to communicate his feelings and anxieties have managed to transform his works into universal messages and Munch into one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century.
This exhibition revolves around the “inner cry” by Munch, to his ability to construct, through blocks of uniform colour and discordant perspectives, the ideal scenario for sharing his emotional and sensorial experiences: a creative process that synthesises observation, memory, emotion.
The itinerary tells the whole universe of the artist, his human journey and his production. Among the works on display are one of the lithographic versions of “The Urlo” (1895) kept in Oslo, “The death of Marat"(1907),"Starry Night” (1922–1924), “The girls on the bridge"(1927),"malinconia” (1900–1901) and “Dance on the beach"(1904).
To enrich the Milanese exhibition, a rich program of events is planned that will involve different cultural realities of the city and that will deepen the figure of the artist and expand the themes of his works.
