The historic 'Lario Express' train leaves on Sunday 12 May. The initiative, now in its eighth edition, is promoted by the Department of Transport and Sustainable Mobility of the Lombardy Region in collaboration with the Fondazione Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and FS Treni Turistici Italiani.

The Lario Express will depart from Milano Central pointing north towards Como. From the Como city then towards the greener and more agricultural Brianza, on a secondary line full of charm, touching numerous places where the train makes short stops. The end of the race will be in Lecco. The staff of the Italian Tourist Railway Association will be present on board to assist travellers. You will travel aboard the steam and electric locomotive with 'Centoporte' carriages from the 30s, Corbellini carriages from the 50s and luggage van.

Departure is scheduled from Milano Central at 7.50. The train will then stop at Monza (arrival 8.18, departure 8.29); Lissone-Muggiò (a. 8.36, p. 8.37); Desio (a. 8.40, p. 8.41); Seregno (a. 8.46, p. 8.47). The arrival in Como San Giovanni is scheduled for 9.18, then it will leave again at 9.29 in the direction of Cantù (a. 9.58, p. 9.59). Here are the next stops: Brenna-Alzate (a. 10.10, p. 10.11); Anzano del Parco (a. 10.18, p. 10.19); Merone (a. 10.28, p. 10.29); Casletto-Rogeno (a. 10.38, p. 10.39); Molteno (a. 10.47, p. 10.48), to then arrive in Lecco at 11.25am.

Here are the return times. Departure from Lecco at 17.30 pm. The subsequent stops: Molteno (a. 18.12, p. 18.14); Casletto-Rogeno (a. 18.23, p. 18.25); Merone (a. 18.36, p. 18.38); Anzano del Parco (at 18.50pm, p. 18.52pm); Brenna-Alzate (a. 19.02, p. 19.04); Cantù (a. 19.16, p. 19.18); Como S. Giovanni (20.03, p. 20.14); Seregno (a. 20.42, p. 20.43); Desio (20.47, p. 20.48); Lissone-Muggiò (a. 20.51, p. 20.52); Monza (a. 20.56, p. 20.57); arrival a Milano Central at 21.10.

The historic trains initiative is increasingly successful: thanks to the collaboration between the Lombardy Region and the FS Foundation, every year it allows thousands of people to discover itineraries and landscapes of our region through an authentic journey through time, aboard trains that have made the history of the Italian railway. In the name of gentle mobility, particularly appreciated by travellers who immerse themselves in an experience with high attractive, historical and cultural value”.

On historic trains it will always be possible to transport your bicycle on board for free using specially equipped luggage compartments.

Tickets to travel on historic trains can be purchased on all Trenitalia sales channels, ticket offices, apps and the official website. Children up to 14 years travel for free.

To support the activities of valorization of the historical heritage of the railway, as per the service contract, Regione Lombardia makes available 600.000 euros every year. Of this budget, approximately 300.000 euros are allocated to historical trains, operated by Fondazione Fs.

The calendar this year includes 20 circulations. Among the main new features introduced compared to the past, 2 vintage train circulations on the route Milano-Brescia-Desenzano with scheduled departures on June 9th and 1st September, and Milano in Genoa on July 14th and November 3rd with ETR 252 'Harlequin', the legendary electric train of the FS Foundation, symbol of Made in Italy and of the economic boom of the 60s.

Re-proposed, the most popular itineraries that is:

  • Laveno Express: da Milano discovering Lake Maggiore. Departures scheduled for Sunday 2 June and 8 September;
  • Lario Express da Milano and Monza for Como and Lecco. Departures scheduled for Sunday 12 May and 13 October;
  • Sebino Express da Milano to Lake Iseo (Paratico). Departures scheduled for Sunday 19 May, 16 June, 15 September and 20 October;
  • Lomellina Express da Milano in Mortara. Departures scheduled for Sunday 26 May and 29 September on the occasion of the event respectively “Welcome to Lomellina” and the Goose Salami Festival.
  • Besanino Express da Milano for Besana, Molteno and Lecco. Departures scheduled for Sunday 22 September and 27 October.

Finally, expected two historic trains on the itinerary Milano – Chiavenna (Sunday 23 June) e between Milano and Cremona (Sunday 17 November, for the Nougat Festival).
