Milano, “Showboat” opens to the public at the Sforzesco Castle. Andata e Ritorno” by Giovanni Frangi.
The Sforzesco Castle | Municipality of Milano presents, from Wednesday 29 March to Sunday 25 June 2023, the exhibition “Showboat. Round trip”, personal exhibition by the artist Giovanni Frangi (Milano, 1959) which returns to exhibit in the heart of Milano with an exhibition project curated by Giovanni Agosti.
The exhibition inhabits two different spaces of the Castle, connected to each other through a sequence of colored banners created by the artist.
In the Salette della Grafica (entrance from the Cortile delle Armi) a sequence of Frangi's extensive graphic production is presented, which since the beginning of the 1980s, when he was a student at the Brera Academy (where he now teaches), accompanies his artistic activity painter, constituting a sort of permanent laboratory of experiments.
In the Sala del Tesoro (entrance from the Rocchetta courtyard) the corpus of books - over one hundred - which document the artist's intense exhibition activity is displayed in its entirety.
At the end of the exhibition, a part of the works on display will be donated by the artist to the Civic Collections, enriching the artistic heritage of the Municipality of Milano.
“The Castello Sforzesco opens up to the contemporary by hosting a refined monograph that collects and recounts the work of an artist, painter, engraver and experimenter, among the most interesting of his generation – stated the councilor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi -. From the dialogue with Giovanni Agosti a complex project was born, which enriches the cultural offer of our city with a further point of view, original and unconventional, on contemporary production".
The exhibition
The prints - in very different techniques and of very varied sizes - are exhibited in the Salette della Grafica in chronological order and testify to fidelity and deviations from an expressive heritage of images, constantly varied but firm in its adherence to the values of nature. The engravings show a recurrence of techniques, with declared predilections (for example the carborundum or monotypes) and reveal a consistency, only rarely denied, in the choice of the print shop in which to operate, that of Corrado Albicocco in Udine, where the best of the Italian art of the last decades.
The books – from large, small and very small publishers – are a sort of summary of all of Frangi's work and show the interest that this artist has always had in documenting his activity. In several cases relationships with poets and writers come to light, on several occasions we witness an advanced reflection on the forms of the art catalog and on the documentation that accompanies the sense of a research that has lasted for many years. In short, they are authentic "artist's books".
The two sections of the exhibition are accompanied by two volumes, published by the Mainz publishing house: the "Andata" contains the prints on display, the "Ritorno" contains the covers of all of Frangi's books.
