Milano: Walter Tobagi Foundation for Journalistic Culture presented at Palazzo Lombardia

Presented to Lombardy Palace la Walter Tobagi Foundation for journalistic culture, established and recognized by a decree signed by the President of the Lombardy Region Attilio Fontana.

The Foundation deals with training activities of the Order of Journalists of Lombardy with the aim of going even beyond the 'continuous training' imposed by the laws on the Orders and represents not only a juridical evolution of the Walter Tobagi Association for the journalism training who for years managed the Order's School of Journalism, later transformed into Master's degree.

The Foundation's instrument is particularly suited to this purpose, due to the autonomy that is recognized, the financial stability that is imposed on it, and the ability to attract contributions, in any form, from third parties interested in its purposes.

“It is particularly nice to talk about journalism and associate it with the figure of Walter Tobagi – underlined the vice-president of the Lombardy Region and councillor for Budget and Finance Marco Alparone – because it means referring to journalism with a capital J: Tobagi is a man who taught what true journalism is, in-depth analysis, a man who was never satisfied with the surface, a man who paid with his life for his passion and dedication to information”.

“Walter Tobagi reminds us that being journalists – he continued Alparone– it means going into the news, going deeper, writing the truth. The Foundation that will deal with journalistic training, will be able to suggest how to best use the new tools that are available to many young people who are approaching the profession and will be a very useful point of reference also for those who, every day, already work in newspaper editorial offices”.

“Society has become very complex – said the president of the Order of Journalists of Lombardy Richard Sorrentino – and journalists need continuous and very high-level training to become 'cultural translators'. To do this we needed a tool that was more suitable for carrying out this type of activity, which would also present itself to potential partners with a different managerial solidity of governance. Hence the idea of transforming the Walter Tobagi Association, which organized the first school of journalism in Italy, remaining the only one for a long time, into something that was more in step with the times. Therefore, the homage to the great journalist killed by terrorists remained because his journalism was very attentive and aware and still today of great relevance to which Lombard journalists must draw inspiration”.

“The Foundation – he explained Sorrentino – in concrete terms it will deal with ongoing training, which has been the prerogative of the Order up to now, and will propose some 'tool boxes' that we have already started to prepare: we are working on the first of these, dedicated to criminal proceedings, with which we will address the issue of media justice”. “In practice – he continued – we want to allow the general public to understand what the journalistic method is, what it means to work for correct and verified information, to seek the truth of things in very short times. There is also the issue of freedom of expression that has kept us busy for a long time, in addition to that of economic compatibility: we also need to study new forms, as is done abroad, to evaluate how publishing companies can support themselves with alternative methods other than simply requesting funding”.

The presentation of the new Foundation was attended, among others, by the rector of the State University of Milano Marina Brambilla, today on the first day of his inauguration at the helm of the university, national and regional councillors of the Order of Journalists, the president of the Territorial Disciplinary Council of Lombardy Paul Of The Hall and some members of the executive body.
