Messina: dal 22 al 24 novembre torna il Festival dei Circoli del Cinema al Cinema Lux

Born with the desire to create a fixed event, unique in Italy, capable of conveying the experiences of the film clubs present throughout the national territory, the festival was developed with the aim of promoting dialogue between the various subjects of the film industry (production, distribution, exhibition, film libraries, film clubs) and strengthening activities aimed at training the public. Since its first edition, it has also hosted a national competition for documentaries on cinema.

The 2024 edition, which has the subtitle “On the side of the public”, is dedicated to the identity and social and cultural perspectives of film clubs in the contemporary scenario, with the involvement of delegates from the main national associations of cinematographic culture recognized by the Ministry of Culture for the realization of a conference called “Stati Generali dei Cineclub in Sicilia”.

The detailed program will be communicated in the next few days, but there are numerous events and important guests that will liven up the Cinema Lux.

The Circoli del Cinema Festival will be inaugurated on Friday 22nd November at 19.00 pm with the award ceremony for Best Italian Documentary on Cinema 2024, assigned to Antonietta De Lillo for “L'occhio della gallina”. The director, who will be present, will be awarded by the President of the Festival's Scientific Committee, the journalist Franco Cicero.

"The jury of the 'Festival dei Circoli del Cinema – Dalla parte del pubblico 2024' for the best documentaries on cinema has decided to unanimously award 'L'occhio della gallina – Autoritratto' by Antonietta De Lillo' – declares Cicero – as a successful and emblematic example of the affirmation of the right to the correct and transparent functioning of a state regulation in support of quality cinema. After the great acclaim for her film 'Il resto di niente' in 2004, Antonietta De Lillo seemed destined to continue her directorial career in a big way. Instead, for 20 years she was forced into a painful and tenacious personal battle, also through a tormented judicial process, because of the institutions that should have supported her. Her work of direct testimony deserves support and solidarity, together with stylistic and visual appreciation, so that it can reach the greatest possible number of spectators".

The evening of Saturday 23 November will instead offer a celebratory event at 21.00pm to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Cinema Lux. A historic milestone that the Cineforum Orione – manager of the historic space since 2022 – wants to share with its members and citizens by screening the film that more than any other has been able to represent the passion for the movie theater and its social importance: “New Cinema Paradiso”, by Giuseppe Tornatore, in a restored edition curated by the Cineteca di Bologna.
