Messina, at Palazzo Zanca two days dedicated to Caravaggio and the Caravaggeschi

The presence of the Mayor of the Municipality of Caravaggio has been announced for the Conference

Messina, at the invitation of the Councilor for Culture Enzo Caruso, the Mayor of the Municipality of Caravaggio Claudio Bolandrini, accompanied by the Mayor of the Municipality of Brignano Gera d'Adda Beatrice Bolandrini, will be present at the Conference “Caravaggio and Caravaggeschi in Messina – The environment, the places, the protagonists - Investigations and research: the state of the art", scheduled for Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th, promoted by the Culture Department of the Municipality of Messina and sponsored by the Sicilian Region, the Municipality of Caravaggio, the University of Studies of Messina, by the Archbishop's Curia, by the Messinese Society of Homeland History and by the Archeoclub of Italy, Messina headquarters. This is what was announced today by Councilor Caruso, during a press conference at Palazzo Zanca, which was also attended by the municipal expert in Modern and Contemporary Art Alex Caminiti, and Dr. Grazia Musolino.

“With this important event – ​​declared Councilor Caruso – Messina presents itself at the 450th anniversary of Caravaggio's birth, honoring itself with the presence of the Mayor of the City who gave birth to him. The work of the Municipal Administration continues to promote Messina on the national and European scene for events that place our city at the center of the Mediterranean as a tangible sign of the presence of important historical figures in Messina. We are honored and proud to be able to have as speakers at the Conference the most accredited scholars from Messina who over the years have spoken expertly about this prestigious artist. The presence of the Mayors Claudio Bolandrini and Beatrice Bolandrini will also allow visitors to visit Caravaggio's paintings exhibited at the Regional Museum". During the press conference, the exhibition of the Nativity by Caravaggio was announced, stolen from Palermo in 1969 from the Oratory of Saints Lorenzo and Francis and reproduced in copy by the artist Alex Caminiti, who, together with Councilor Caruso, accompanied journalists and photographers to view a preview of the work.

“I feel like the armed wing – declared Caminiti – of this beautiful team of scholars. I usually adapt Renaissance works to Contemporary, but this time I made an exception to my style and I think I created a good work."

“The presence in Messina of experts in the sector – added Grazia Musolino – will allow us to take stock of the state of the art in relation to studies on Caravaggio during the conference. Our idea is to make the territory emerge through its assets and works".

The conference program includes work divided into four sessions spread over the two days on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th, in the Hall of Flags of Palazzo Zanca.
With the general coordination of Councilor Caruso, the scientific one is entrusted to Grazia Musolino, Art Historian, former Manager responsible for UO2, enhancement, maintenance and restoration for the Regional Interdisciplinary Museum of Messina, and the graphic creation at Todo Arte.
On Tuesday 15th, after the institutional greetings at 9.30 am from the Mayor Cateno De Luca, the Councilor Caruso, the Mayor of the Municipality of Caravaggio Claudio Bolandrini, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Messina Mons. Cesare Di Pietro, the first session with the introductory report by Grazia Musolino on Caravaggio and "Sicilian master Lorenzo Carlo, painter in Rome", followed by the interventions of Gioacchino Barbera, art historian, former Director of the Regional Gallery of Sicily in Palazzo Abatellis, on "Asterisks on the living room of Caravaggio in Sicily”; and Caterina Di Giacomo, art historian, former director of the Regional Interdisciplinary Museum of Messina, on “The Resurrection of Lazarus by Caravaggio. Conservative chronicles of a masterpiece".
After the suspension at 13pm, the second session will begin at 16pm chaired by Salvatore Bottari, Professor of the University of Messina, President of the Messinese Society of Homeland History, with interventions by Francesca Cicala Campagna, Art Historian, former Director of Regional Museum, on “Caravaggio last period. A new attribution proposal”; by Giampaolo Chillè, art historian. Research Fellow, University of Messina, Department of Ancient and Modern Civilizations, on “Caravaggio in the pages of the Jesuit Placido Samperi”; by Alessandra Lavorato, official of the art history board of the Interdisciplinary Regional Museum, on "The Messina context upon the arrival of Caravaggio between mannerism and reformed painting". The first day will end with a debate.
The program for Wednesday 15th includes the third session at 9.30am chaired by Orazio Micali, Director of the Regional Interdisciplinary Museum, with interventions by Donatella Spagnolo, Art History Director of the Regional Interdisciplinary Museum, on "Mario Minniti, Caravaggio's adopted Messina ”; by Virginia Buda, art history director of the BB.CC.AA Superintendence. of Messina, on “Alonzo Rodriguez. The lesson of Caravaggio and the classicist turn"; and by Caterina Ciolino, art historian and former director of the Historical-Artistic section of the Superintendence BB.CC.AA., on the “Caravaggesque influences in the goldsmiths of Messina. The processional fercoli of San Placido and Santa Lucia”.
After the suspension at 13pm, the fourth session chaired by Mirella Vinci, Superintendent of BB.CC.AA. of Messina, will begin at 16pm with speeches by Stefania Lanuzza, official of the Art History Directorate of the BB.CC.AA. Superintendency, on “The Last Supper by Alonzo Rodriguez. Stylistic aspects and conservative history"; and by Davide Rigaglia, Restorer of Cultural Heritage in Rome, on "From the wall to the canvas: the bold restoration intervention of Cesare Brandi's ICR". The works will be concluded by Councilor Enzo Caruso.
At 18.30 pm, in the Falcone Borsellino Room, the “Visual Reading of the Last Supper (1617) by Alonzo Rodriquez. Mural painting detached from the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria del Gesù Inferiore” and the exhibition of the painting by Alex Caminiti, a copy of the Nativity with Saints Lorenzo and Francis by Caravaggio, stolen in 1969 from the Oratory of Saints Lorenzo and Francis, Palermo.
