Lombardy: Olympics and Paralympics, Region delivers certificate of thanks to Lombard athletes of Paris 2024
Thanks to all the athletes from Lombardy who took part in the Paris Olympics and a symbolic passing of the baton between last summer's Games and the winter ones that will be held in Lombardy in 2026. This is the spirit that animated the event with which the president Attilio Fontana, together with the Undersecretary for Sport, Federica Peaks, and on behalf of the entire Regional Council, wanted to thank the Olympic patrol (70 athletes born in Lombardy + 10 raised and resident in the region) and paralympic (35 athletes) present at Paris 2024 through the delivery of an award.
PRESIDENT FONTANA: LOMBARDIA EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS
“Lombardy has achieved extraordinary goals – said the president Fontana – and it has confirmed, once again, absolute excellence also in sport. The Olympic and Paralympic athletes have brought the name of our land to the top by demonstrating tenacity, talent, commitment and perseverance: typical qualities of our people that they have been able to express at the highest levels on the Olympic stage. For us it is a source of pride to be able to thank them and reward them on behalf of all Lombardy”.
“Lombardy – he continued Fontana – is in all respects the first Olympic Region, considering the record of medals and important results obtained by our athletes, thanks also to the widespread work on the territory of the various federations and of those who work daily in sports venues. Lombardy is the first Olympic Region also because it is rich in structures that have proved fundamental for the preparation for the five-ring event: I think of Montichiari for cycling, Desio for rhythmic gymnastics, Brescia for artistic gymnastics and Milano for volleyball. As a Region we continue to support sport at all levels, from grassroots activity to that of the best competitors”.
The gaze is already turned to the Olympics Milano-Cortina 2026: "We are working to create a great event - said Fontana - that puts Lombardy at the center of world attention. We will demonstrate, once again, our ability to organize a great event knowing how to promote, at the same time, the beauty and attractiveness of our territories".
The event was also attended by the regional undersecretary with responsibility for Sport, Federica Peaks; the president of the Regional Council of Lombardy, Federico Romani; the president of the Paralympic Committee, Luca Pancalli; the president of the CONI, Giovanni Malago; the presidents of Coni Lombardia Marco Riva and the Lombardy Paralympic Committee Pierangelo Santelli.
UNDERSECRETARY PICCHI: SPORT AS A TOOL FOR INCLUSION
“The certificate delivered to the athletes – stated the undersecretary Picchi – is our way of saying thank you to those who have brought prestige to Lombardy through the greatest sports showcase. Every performance at the Olympics and Paralympics has been precious to us, every single athlete embodies a path of self-denial, passion, sacrifice and dedication that we want to exalt. Sport is also and above all an effective tool for inclusion: Olympic and Paralympic athletes have been able to give us great sporting emotions. On the part of the Region, in addition to the valorization of sport as a competitive activity, there is the vision of sport as an educational and aggregative tool, for this reason we also pay great attention to the issues of accessibility of sports facilities for people with disabilities”.
