«I don't pretend that my Comedies should be the school of men; but this one I would like it to be, and in this one I have studied to act as a Preceptor, as much as I ever could; because, having needed it in the past, I would have liked to see an example on the stage that would have woken me up and corrected me.» Carlo Goldoni

This is what Goldoni underlines regarding his comedy, written in 1750. Gambling as vertigo, therefore, for him was not only linked to the desire to accumulate money but a real way of life. In any case, he knew the gambling tables very well, just as he knew very well all the backrooms and casinos, official and otherwise, where fortunes were made and undone. The author tells us about the typical day, from dawn to dusk, of a young bourgeois, Florindo, completely subservient to the game, without other horizons and concrete objectives. Goldoni skillfully paints the environment: girlfriends, friends, real and fake, servants, exploiters and protectors. With this play he manages to deftly expose the mental mechanisms of the pathological gambler, revealing all the processes and traps into which the gambler falls, often dragging those around him with him. The spectator, as the story progresses, finds himself on a ridge between tragedy and comedy. He laughs but he also understands how gambling is a dramatic addiction, no less dangerous than any narcotic.
