Cutro massacre, stele in memory of the victims in Crotone

A work that recalls the sense of humanity and welcome that characterized the entire Crotone community in those tragic days

Cutro massacre, stele in memory of the victims in Crotone.

Crotone does not forget. It was inaugurated yesterday morning on seafront citizen, in the square in front of the cemetery entrance, a stele in memory of the victims of the Steccato di Cutro tragedy.

Stele donated by the association “Crotone in Bloom”, designed by Elio Libonati, student of the Pertini – Santoni Institute with prof. Holy Cuozzo and created by Metalgraund Hunting.

The councilor for Social Policies inaugurated the work Filly Pollinzi and the president of the “Crotone in Fiore” Association Caterina Cotroneo and many students of the Pertini – Santoni Institute, as well as numerous citizens.

A work that commemorates a tragedy that affected the entire community of Crotone, installed by the Municipality in an emblematic place: near the cemetery where two victims of the Cutro tragedy rest, including the little Ali, which became the symbol of a massacre that involved many children and a few meters from the sea, those meters that separated the victims from the possibility of salvation that tragic night of February 26th.

But it is also a work, enriched by a poem by the same professor. Cotroneo which invites hope and peace. Which recalls the sense of humanity and welcome that characterized the entire community of Crotone in those tragic days.

As councilor Pollinzi said, «Crotone, in those days, joined in the pain of the families of the victims but also demonstrated a great sense of solidarity, of humanity and compactness. He showed his big heart. This work is a memory but also a stimulus to continue on the path of acceptance and attention to others. As a Municipality, with the “L'Umanità Retold” project we are entering schools to tell children about the Cutro tragedy and we are finding a lot of participation. I thank the Crotone in Fiore association for this donation which demonstrates even more how much sharing of this tragedy remains in people's hearts."

The teacher. Cotroneo said: «We felt the duty to carry out this work, to dedicate it to the many children, women and men who saw their dreams of a better life shattered that night".
