Cagliari, at the Palazzo di Città will host the photographic masterpieces of Robert Capa
From May 31th to October 6th 2024, City Hall in Cagliari hosts a retrospective dedicated to the famous photographer Robert Capa (1913 - 1954).
The event coincides with the anniversary of the eightieth anniversary of the Allied landing on the beaches of Normandy occurred on June 6, 1944 e immortalized by the shots of the man who is considered the father of modern photojournalism.
The exhibition, wanted by the Municipal Administration of Cagliari and organized by Silvana Editoriale, with the support of the Fondazione di Sardegna, is curated by Marco Minuz.
Thanks to the collaboration of the Magnum Photos Agency of Paris, brings together 110 fotografie, thus guaranteeing a complete anthological journey. All the main experiences will be present on display which characterize the work of the Hungarian photographer, a naturalized American: the Parisian years, the Spanish Civil War, the war experience between China and Japan, the Second World War with the liberation of Italy up to Montecassino, the landing in Normandy, the allied advance up to Berlin, post-World War II Russia, the birth of the state of Israel and, finally, the conflict in Indochina, where Capa died prematurely in 1954. A complete panorama that will provide the visitor with the opportunity to learn about all the most important phases of this photographer's career.
Earned fame on the field, Capa published in the most important international journals, including “Life” and “Picture Post”, with that style of photography that is powerful and touching at the same time, without any rhetoric and with such urgency as to push him to shoot a few meters from the battlefields, right into the heart of conflicts. In this sense, his statement is famous: “If you haven't taken a good photograph, it means you haven't gotten close enough to reality.”
But the work of Robert Capa did not limit himself only to witnessing dramatic events, but it also ranged in other dimensions not attributable to the suffering of war. The exhibition in fact explores the photographer's relationship with the world of culture of the time with portraits of famous people such as Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote and Henry Matisse, thus showing his ability to penetrate deeply into the lives of the people immortalized.
A reminder will be dedicated to his reports dedicated to period films. After the end of the Second World War it is the actress Ingrid Bergman to introduce Capa on the set of the film "Arch of Triumph" of 1948 by Lewis Milestone where he tries his hand as a still photographer.
The one hosted at Palazzo a Palazzo di Città in the heart of the historic center of Cagliari from 31 May to 6 October 2024 it will therefore be an exhibition to be discovered in the name of what was a mantra for Capa: “Love people and make them understand.”
The exhibition is accompanied by a monographic volume Silvana Editoriale.
