Reading a book it is a practice that It offers countless benefits to the development of all children, stimulating the brain, developing language and improving communication. In children born preterm, exposure to sounds with meaning and specifically aimed at the individual child (respecting his behavioral signals) through reading aloud, proves to be a safe intervention strategy for their neurobehavioral development. Furthermore, experts have proven that the Human contact and the familiarity of voices can be therapeutically beneficial for newborns, helping them in their healing and development.

Since July 2023 it has therefore started in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit of the ASST Spedali Civili of Brescia – with the support of the Hospital Pediatric Psychology and the TINCORAGGIO Association which purchased the books to donate to the parents – a reading project dedicated to premature and sick newborns who require intensive care.

The prize awarded on May 13th It is the tangible result of the strong collaboration between ASST Spedali Civili, the Health Protection Agency (ATS) Brescia and the Libraries of the Municipality of Brescia who for years have been synergistically promoting reading as a tool for relationships and well-being.

The characterizing element the project is the creation of a setting in which the book is given to parents as a tool "to be used" during the child's stay in hospital, thus creating a context that makes it possible to adopt behavior conducive to health, according to the principles of promotion of health.

In fact, at the first meeting with the parents, it is donated a specially selected book – which the doctor and psychologist deem appropriate – and give indications on its use so as to encourage the child's exposure to the parents' voice: the book remains in the ward for the exclusive use of that specific family and is taken home upon discharge. Furthermore, healthcare workers support and encourage parents to read and during their child care activities they accompany the actions they are performing with words, or tell nursery rhymes, stories and songs.
