Brescia, November 27th MEETmeTONIGHT returns – Face to face with research

Brescia, 24 November 2020 – The scientific dissemination event “MEETmeTONIGHT – Face to face with research” is back, this year included in a large online event. On Friday 27 November the annual European Researchers' Night initiative, promoted by the European Commission to encourage meetings between researchers and citizens and enhance the culture of research, also stops in Brescia.

The event, dedicated to students and teachers of Brescia schools, is promoted and organized again this year by the University of Brescia, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Brescia branch), the Brescia Musei Foundation, the SantaGiulia Academy of Fine Arts and the Conservatory Luca Marenzio. A large network in the name of Research, which makes use of the coordination of the Municipality of Brescia and the support of the Territorial School Office, to promote the most important European event of scientific communication.
Space for researchers who will be called to talk about their research activity live in a popular way. There is also room for interaction: themed quizzes and surveys will involve students and all those who are connected.
In the morning, from 9:00 to 12:00, each organization will propose its own research activities, also and above all aimed at school students.
In the afternoon, from 14pm to 00pm, the event will be combined with a rich schedule of live contributions dedicated to this year's theme: FUTURE: BE THE CHANGE, developed around five thematic areas – “SMART CITIES”, “HUMANITIES”, HEALTH”, “TECHNOLOGY” and “SUSTAINABILITY” – identified by the slogans BE URBAN, BE CULTURAL, BE ACTIVE, BE CONNECTED and BE RESPONSIBLE.
Special guest Paolo Vineis, Professor of Environmental Epidemiology at Imperial College London, who will connect at 15pm to talk about "Climate change and health".

Università degli Studi di Brescia
The University offers 12 mini-talks in the morning. There are many themes: from the potential of mathematical optimization for the environment to recycling as a fundamental activity with a view to a sustainable circular economy; from the project dedicated to improving hygiene and environmental health in Brazilian schools to the focus on new electronics and sensor manufacturing technologies; from the exploration of brain stimulation techniques to research on the effects of environmental exposure to neurotoxicants; from studies on the zebrafish, a small tropical fish model for the study of human diseases, to 3D physiotherapy; from the evolution of the therapeutic possibilities of oncology radiotherapy to the entrepreneurship education path for the realization of business ideas.
The program of the University of Brescia continues in the afternoon. At 14 pm, for the Health – Be active area, prof. Giovanni Mirabella of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences will be the protagonist of the ted "An uncontrollable impulse" which delves into the causes underlying impulse control problems in developmental diseases such as autism, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, and obsessive compulsive syndrome; at 00 pm, for the thematic area Humanities - Be cultural, it will be the turn of Francesco Menoncin of the Department of Economics and Management with "SPQR: Public Spending, Quarantine and Recovery": focus on the prospects for the Next Generation EU in the era of the pandemic and the economic crisis: from state intervention to the consequences for the next generation EU, from the effects on international trade to the crisis in the distribution and perception of income, from energy communities to the development of a new European Green Deal plan to reach the future decarbonization goals; at 16 pm, within the thematic area Sustainability – Be responsible, prof. Gianni Gilioli of the Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine will discuss the evolution of food systems and the transition towards sustainability in the ted "Sustainability: a challenge to anthropocentrism" developed as a round table with representatives of the scientific and productive world; at 40 pm, for the thematic area Technology - Be connected, Professor Elisabetta Comini of the Department of Information Engineering will present experiments and prototypes for the development of future technologies in the "Physics and Nanotechnologies" lecture, proposing practical examples of the preparation of nanostructures and their integration into electrical devices.

Catholic University
Future be the change is the theme that dominates this year's edition and in the subtitle the invitation to look towards the future. It is in this perspective that the 16 young Future Labs are inserted, i.e. shared and innovative paths, which start from the bottom and represent the path to a "Brescia Recovery Plan". The project, coordinated by Barbara Boschetti, professor of administrative law, together with Ivana Pais, professor of Economic Sociology, took shape within the Territory Observatory (Opter). The FutureLabs involved the third and fourth classes of four schools in Brescia: the Abba Ballini Institute and the Einaudi of Chiari, the Carli and Luzzago high schools.
The results will be presented at Meetmetonight on November 27th in two moments: in the morning, at 9.30 am, At school for the future, with the principals who participated in the project, thanks also to the collaboration with the Provincial School Office, while in the afternoon, at 14.45 pm, The future through the eyes of the future, the protagonists will be the students who will expose the ideas that emerged in the working groups to the citizens. A designer will also participate and at the end of the meeting will graphically convey the ideas that emerged.
Space for Psychology and music with The mind in sounds, in the meeting organized by the dean of the faculty Alessandro Antonietti and with the researcher Alice Cancer, in dialogue with Marina Vaccarini of the Luca Marenzio Conservatory. A virtuous collaboration to explain how music can help in the rehabilitation of language.
In the afternoon event, Youth & Covid: in search of meaning, 17.55 pm, psychologist Semira Tagliabue will present a study conducted on young people to understand what impact the lockdown period has had on young people. Experiencing stressful or traumatic events can generate a 'crisis of meaning' in people which activates the meaning-making process.
Like every year, an important space is reserved for the activities of the faculty of mathematical, physical and natural sciences with Be ready for the science. Here there will be space for research dedicated to the environment with images from the micrometeorological tower of Bosco Fontana in the province of Mantua which measures environmental pollutants and the composition of the atmosphere with very sophisticated equipment (Angelo Finco). Physics researchers will accompany us on a virtual journey into the spectroscopy, superconductor and quantum analysis laboratories (Stefania Pagliara and Claudio Giannetti), while Daniele Toti, computer science teacher, will propose a reconstruction of terrorist networks made on Twitter; for mathematics, space for the languages ​​of geometry with teachers Silvia Pianta and Silvia Pagani.
There will be interaction with classes and individual students with a quiz with prizes on the contents of the research presented in the morning. The appointment will be coordinated by professors Alessandro Musesti and Marco Della Vedova.
In the afternoon, at 17.25 pm, Prof. Giacomo Gerosa will propose a reflection on infinite growth with the ted The butterfly, the elephant and the paradigm of infinite growth.
The participation of the Navy is particularly significant with the intervention of Rear Admiral Massimiliano Nannini, director of the Hydrographic Institute of Genoa, who will talk about the research campaigns carried out at the North Pole. A both human and technological challenge on the Alliance ship in the Arctic Ocean and the measurement of the Molloy Hole which reaches 5.500 meters deep.

Brescia Museums Foundation
The proposals of the Brescia Musei Foundation fall within the "humanities" area summarized in the slogan "be cultural". We start in the morning with an original and poetic proposal for primary and secondary schools: Return to nature, a 1 km laboratory, 0% biodegradable, which uses exclusively natural materials; various creative experiments will allow us to establish a poetic dialogue between art and nature, a relationship that already existed in ancient times. In the afternoon at 16.20pm, an unmissable appointment with Francesca Morandini, curator of the collections and archaeological areas, who will exclusively offer an engaging TED on Winged Victory. The ancient statue, which recently returned to Brescia after the important restoration at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, is already making headlines thanks to the new discoveries resulting from the investigations and research recently conducted.
The long day of events ends with the special free screening, available on the Eden in Salotto platform from 20pm to midnight, of the film Anthropocene – The human era (Canada, 24, 2018'). It is the completion of a trilogy of documentaries on the impact of human activities on our planet. A journey across six continents, to compare the different ways in which man is exploiting earth's resources and modifying the Earth like never before, more than natural phenomena do. Brescia SantaGiulia Academy of Fine Arts
The SantaGiulia Academy of Fine Arts of Brescia presents a mini-talk at 18pm, included in the thematic area Smart cities – Be urban, during which prof. Massimo Tantardini – School Coordinator of the Graphics and Communication course, Department of Visual Arts – will be the protagonist of the ted “Peripheral visions. The dress rehearsal of globalization. (On and Off line)”, dedicated to the international action-research project he coordinated and to the exhibition “Peripheral visions. A study about”, created following a visual culture study on the relationship between spaces and lives in suburban areas around the world.
The Academy also organizes three different LABs during the morning: at 9 am, “Instagram: positive influences and how to exercise them”, curated by Laura Tonin, Social media manager of the Academy; at 30am “Illustration. 'Good stories!' … 'So many stories!' Narration through images" by prof. Antongionata Ferrari, School of Graphics and Communication, department of Visual Arts; at 10am “Instagram and art: the place to be”, where prof. Massimo Tantardini meets and moderates the speech on the meaning of 'creating art through Instagram' held by his colleague prof. Benedetto Demaio, teacher of Latest trends in visual arts and Advertising Communication - department of Visual Arts and Applied Arts, of the SantaGiulia Academy of Fine Arts - Content creator and Visual Artist.

Conservatory of music 'Luca Marenzio'
For the thematic area Technology - Be connected, Professor Marcella Mandanici of the 'Luca Marenzio' Music Conservatory will present some technological integration paths that can be activated for higher musical education, including the application of technologies in the field of education and of music therapy.
