Arezzo, “The Other Side of Art”: the festival dedicated to street dance.

Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November the first edition of “The other side of art” is scheduled, which will propose a series of initiatives dedicated to the promotion and knowledge of the various forms of urban dance. Organized by the association Progetti per la danza, it benefits from the patronage and contribution of the Department of Sport and Youth Policies.

The event will take place between contests with students from Italian schools, masterclasses with internationally renowned teachers, street art workshops and training meetings on current issues, encouraging the active participation of the younger generations, their creativity, energy and expressiveness.

The commissioner Federico Scapecchi"The project ranked first in the ranking provided by the autumn call for contributions to recreational and sports activities for young people. Obviously the reasons lie in the quality of the proposal but I would still like to underline two aspects: the combination of places like Villa Severi and the Tenda theatre, different yet united in this perspective of youth protagonism. The second is related to the fact that for Arezzo it is a novelty, linked to disciplines that make urban space their natural home: an absolute first but promoted by an organization that has been meritoriously very active for years".

The heart of “The other side of art” will be on Sunday at 14pm: a contest at the Tenda theatre on Viale Amendola, in fact, will offer a spectacular challenge open to different age groups between individual dancers or entire crews in the three categories Choreographic, Mixstyle and Breaking. The performances, presented by Alessandra La Pazz, will be judged by a jury with some of the major representatives of Italian street dance such as Raoul Del Gado, Serena SèSè Ballarin and Andrea Bertocci from Arezzo. The most deserving students or groups will receive scholarships, mentions or other prizes aimed at supporting their artistic growth.

Bertocci himself will open the day at 11 with a masterclass in breaking which will offer the opportunity to discuss and receive advice from the artistic director of the Flash Kids crew who in 2019 won the talent show “Ballando con te” on Rai 1 and who in 2024 experienced the thrill of dancing at the Coldplay concert at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

“The other side of art” is a further event conceived by Progetti per la danza which, for about fifteen years, has organised events, competitions and campuses such as InDanza&InArte dedicated to the promotion of dance in all its different forms, allowing the city of Arezzo to become a point of reference for the training and valorization of young talents in the choreographic scene.

The street dance will be combined with a free-to-attend street art workshop held by professional writers who, using ecological spray paints, will be oriented towards the creation of works of art on recycled materials that will then become the scenography of the contest itself. Finally, a meeting to raise awareness against bullying and the dangers of the internet is planned, open to the dancers present and their families, held by psychologist Elisa Marcheselli.

"This new event - he concludes the president of Projects for Dance adds Anna Pagano - aims to give life to a great party dedicated to street dance in a spirit of healthy competition, pure fun and social inclusion as hip hop culture wants. The hope is to create a format capable of involving young people from all over the peninsula and providing new opportunities for comparison, training, valorization and growth".
