Alexandria, Day of National Unity, of the Constitution, of the Anthem and of the Flag

Alessandria, on Wednesday 17 March the "Day of National Unity, of the Constitution, of the Anthem and of the Flag" is celebrated in Italy, established as a civil holiday with Law 23 November 2012, n. 222.

The purpose indicated by this Law is to remember and promote the values ​​of citizenship and reaffirm and consolidate national identity through civic memory. In fact, the date chosen corresponds to the day on which the proclamation of the unification of Italy took place in Turin: 17 March 1861.

Until the 2019 edition, at the Monumental Complex of the Citadel, the City of Alessandria proposed a commemorative program for this important day: a program whose development - in the presence of the Local Authorities, representatives of the students of the city schools and of the Fighting Associations and of Arms – was divided into some significant and particularly solemn moments such as the raising of the flag and the performance of the anthem “Canto degli Italiani”, by the Banda Civica Fiati Orchestra “G. Cantone” of Alessandria.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic emergency, last year's 2020 celebration was cancelled.

Also for the current year 2021, given the entry of the Alessandria territory into the "red zone" as sanctioned by the recent regulatory and prescriptive provisions for the fight against Covid-19, the Municipal Administration has agreed with the Prefecture of Alessandria regarding the cancellation of the in-person ceremony on March 17th.

However, the importance of the themes evoked by the "Day of National Unity, of the Constitution, of the Anthem and of the Flag" remains: themes to which Alessandria looks with particular attention, inviting the city community to consider and interpret their validity not already "in the presence ", but - also for the 2021 edition - in an "ideal" and, no less, convinced and passionate way, to increasingly consolidate the common belonging and bonds of solidarity of the Italian people, engaged in recent months in the difficult pandemic test .
