Verona, the city is ready to welcome the opening match of the 2023 Women's European Volleyball Championship.

Verona is ready to host an international sports competition in the Arena again. Almost 35 years after the last competitive event, the volleyball match on May 23, 1988 between the United States and the Soviet Union, international sport returns thanks to a collective commitment.

The inaugural match of the 2023 Women's European Volleyball Championship will take place in Verona on 15 August inside our amphitheatre. The Municipality accepted the request of the Italian Volleyball Federation which had moved in this direction in recent years.

The last sporting event dates back to almost 35 years ago, since then there have been no competitive events as they were unauthorized.

“A result that is the result of important team work, which in recent months has seen the commitment of several subjects moving together in the same direction, I am happy with the result – comments the mayor Damiano Tommasi -. All this was possible thanks to the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Sport, the Undersecretary Gianmarco Mazzi and the Superintendent Vincenzo Tinè, Cecilia Gasdia, Superintendent of the Arena Foundation, who contributed to the planning of this important international sporting event, in half of an equally important lyrical season, that of the centenary. I thank the President of Coni Giovanni Malagò, the President of the National Volleyball Federation Giuseppe Manfredi and Stefano Bianchini president of the FIPAV territorial committee for having insisted in this direction. The journey that will accompany us until the 15 Olympics will therefore begin on August 2026th, where the Arena will host the final ceremony of the Olympic Games. Sport and Arena, a combination that can only inspire."

The group draw is expected in the afternoon in Naples, and we will thus know our Azzurri's opponents.
