Venice Film Festival, 'Poor Things' by Yorgos Lanthimos wins the Golden Lion.
The film won the Golden Lion of the 2023 Venice Film Festival 'Poor Things' by the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. The Venice 80 Jury, chaired by Damien Chazelle and composed of Saleh Bakri, Jane Campion, Mia Hansen-Løve, Gabriele Mainetti, Martin McDonagh, Santiago Mitre, Laura Poitras and Shu Qi, awarded it after having viewed the 23 films in competition. Matteo Garrone, with the film 'Io Capitano', won the Silver Lion for best director.
“This film tells the story of a wonderful creature and it wouldn't exist without Emma Stone who is another wonderful creature. This film is hers, without her it would not exist,” said Greek director Lanthimos after the award ceremony. “Thanks to the Venice festival – he added – that he accepted this film. It took a few years to make and we waited until the film industry was ready to embrace it. The cast cannot celebrate the award now and we hope to be able to do it together as soon as possible. My hope is that the Hollywood strike will be resolved soon, it is in everyone's interest."
The Volpi Cup for the best male interpretation of the films in the main competition of the Festival was awarded to the American actor Peter Sarsgaard protagonist of the film 'Memory' by Michel Franco. The Volpi Cup for best female performance went to the American actress and singer Cailee Spaeny for the film 'Priscilla' by Sofia Coppola.
The Japanese film 'Aku wa sonzai shinai (The devil does not exist)' by Ryusuke hamaguchi was awarded the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize.
Earning the Best Screenplay Award is Pablo Larraín and Guillermo Caldòn for the Chilean film 'El Conde' directed by Larraìn himself.
The film 'Zielona Granica (Green Border)' by the Polish director Agnieszka Holland was awarded the Special Jury Prize of the Competition.
The Hungarian film 'Magyarázat mindenre (Explanation for everything) by Gabor Reisz won the Best Film Award in the Orizzonti section. This was decided by the Orizzonti jury, chaired by Jonas Carpignano.
The directorial debut of Micaela Ramazzotti with 'Felicità', proposed in the Orizzonti Extra section of the Venice Film Festival, he received the Spectators' Award - Armani Beauty.

The Marcello Mastroianni Award, dedicated to a young emerging actor, of the 2023 Venice Film Festival went to Seydou Sarr for the film 'Io Capitano' by Matteo Garrone.
