Chieti, passes by the historic return of the Colonetta Cup.
Two days of motors on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September with the “Lotus against time” initiative in Abruzzo and Chieti, which will end on Sunday 17th with the re-enactment of the Coppa della Colonnetta, a historic car race that took place in the city in the 30s. This morning the presentation with the deputy mayor and councilor for events Paolo De Cesare, Maurizio Barbacane, delegate of the Lotus Italia Club which organizes the event in collaboration with the Ruote Classiche Teatine association chaired by Filippo Rosa.
History and passion
“We are happy to return to host an event that combines history and passion for cars – said the deputy mayor Paolo De Cesare – This is a combination capable of bringing thousands of people to Chieti, as has happened in the last three years thanks to our idea of activating this economic and tourist driving force for the city. For this reason we will apply to be part of the national circuit of Motor Cities, it is an association based in Maranello, it is national and welcomes entities that have events and an active and consolidated motoring vocation in their past"
“We hope to have good news within the year. We have grown a lot - explains the deputy mayor -, the last event, the Gran Criterium Vetturette, in August, was a great success in terms of participation and public and this convinced us both to promote and nourish this identity, because Chieti , thanks also to the industriousness of the sector associations that we thank, is becoming a reference for Abruzzo and beyond. Today we present another historic event with the Coppa della Colonnetta and we expect many people who will come to experience it and assist".
A great passion for engines
“The event arrives for the very first time in Abruzzo, on the streets of the province, but the final test will take place in Chieti and will conclude the two days – he says Maurizio Barbacane, of the Club Lotus Italia – I thank the national president Paolo Zannelli who believed in us and brought the event to our region and to the city where I cultivate this great passion for motors. Lotus against time is a traveling event now in its eighth edition and which will bring the regularity test to Chieti. We won't have a "race", but a re-enactment of the Coppa della Colonnetta, a car circuit from the 30s. Sunday's competition will be divided into three rings with different mileages, the longest being around 25 km".
“I always start from Corso Marrucino, which will also be the arrival. To date, 40 cars have participated - adds Barbacane -, these are crews from all over Italy, as well as from Greece and Switzerland. The cars are modern and on Saturday 16 September they will parade along a tourist itinerary that from L'Aquila will descend to Campo Imperatore, to touch Popoli along its famous "turns", to arrive at the Trabocchi coast".
A beautiful and well-attended event
“We are happy that the Lotus Club Italia has chosen Chieti as the destination of the 2023 traveling rally – explains Filippo Rosa, president of Ruote classical teatine – when we found out we immediately took action to build, together, a beautiful and participatory event. In particular, with Classic Wheels of Teatro in these three years we have managed to register the trademark of a series of events that have taken place over the years, such as the Gran Criterium, now it is the turn of the Coppa della Colonnetta, which returns after about 90 years".
“A real event, today's and also yesterday's which took place between the two war conflicts, in 1929, '31 and the last, in 1932, an edition which had historic crews and which saw Mario Tadini as the winner – he adds Rosa -, official driver of the nascent Ferrari team, among Enzo's very first collaborators also in the birth of the Alfa Romeo racing team at the time. For the Colonnetta Cup it will be a new beginning and the year will also be a test."
“As has already happened for the Gran Criterium Vetturette, we will revive a tradition that made our city a place where we could meet to compete – concludes the president -, but also to watch beautiful and important competitions, Sunday's competition only had three editions, we hope that with this return we will be able to give continuity to a prestigious event like the one in the past".
