Rome. Nicola Calipari, killed in Baghdad on 4 March 2005, is remembered at the Rome Police Headquarters.

Yesterday morning, at the Rome Police Headquarters, it was remembered the State Police official Nicola Calipari, who died in Baghdad on 4 March 2005.

On behalf of the Chief of Police - Director General of Public Security, Prefect Pisani, the Deputy Director General of Public Security with deputy functions, Prefect Vittorio Rizzi, placed a laurel wreath in front of the bronze bas-relief portraying the heroic policeman.

Also present at the ceremony, officiated by the Chaplain Don Nicola Tagliente, were the official's wife, Dr. Rosa Maria Villecco, the Prefect of Rome Lamberto Giannini, the Police Commissioner of Rome Carmine Belfiore, other civil and military authorities, numerous colleagues who known and with whom he worked during his 20-year career in the cities of Genoa, Cosenza and Rome.

Nicola Calipari, awarded the gold medal for military valour, 19 years ago led a team which, in the midst of the Iraqi conflict, immediately after having contributed to the liberation of Giuliana Sgrena, was accompanying the journalist to the airport where a plane would take her back at home. Calipari was fatally shot at a US checkpoint while traveling in the car carrying the hostage. The gunshots hit him because he shielded the hostage with his body.
