Pietralata: Rome capital offers over 7.500 mXNUMX for the technological hub headquarters.

Roma Capitale grants the surface right for approximately 7.500 mXNUMX at the Rome Technopole Foundation is preferably used for construction of the technological hub headquarters (first lot). The measure for the concession was presented yesterday morning by the Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, by the Magnificent Rector of Sapienza University of Rome Antonella Polimeni, by the Vice President of the Lazio Region Roberta Angelilli, by the Vice President of Unindustria Alessandro Francolini and by the Councilors for Urban Planning, Maurizio Veloccia and for Heritage , Tobia Zevi.
The concession, which will be approved today with a council resolution to be submitted to the vote of the Capitoline Assembly, constitutes the first step towards the creation of the Rome Technopole.

Rome Technopole brings together the 7 main universities based in Lazio, the 4 major public research bodies, Unindustria, the Lazio Region, the Municipality of Rome, the Chambers of Commerce of Rome, Latina-Frosinone, Rieti-Viterbo, other public bodies, over 20 industrial groups and companies. This is an innovation ecosystem financed by the MUR within the regional PNRR which will fuel the research, training and innovation chain within the three areas of strategic interest for Lazio: energy transition, digital transition, health and biopharma.

On 8 June 2022, with the signature of the founding bodies, the Rome Technopole Foundation was established, which represents the operational tool in the implementation of the Rome Technopole project, of which Sapienza is the public proponent. Rector Polimeni was appointed President of the Foundation, as required by the Statute.
The concession of the spaces by the Municipality for the construction of the Rome Technopole headquarters is free of charge, it will have a duration of 99 years starting from the signing of the specific agreement and is Rome's contribution to the Foundation, as founder promoter.
The surface sold is located in the Pietralata quadrant, within the SDO Detailed Plan. The area was chosen both for the correspondence of the functions of the Rome Technopole with those envisaged in the SDO (including research, technological transfer, training and higher university education) and for the relevance that the intervention assumes for the entire quadrant.

The Technopole it will consist of 3 buildings plus the appurtenant green areas etc.) and will be built in two phases: the first involves the construction, by Rome Technopole with PNRR financing (around 11 million euros), of a building on the area currently granted by Roma Capitale. The second step instead involves the construction of two other buildings (plus appurtenant areas) with regional funds from the 2021-26 FESR Regional Program (around 20.000 million euros) managed by Roma Capitale.
The intervention on the first lot involves the construction of a building of approximately 2.300 mXNUMX where the headquarters of the Rome Technopole Foundation will be located as well as classrooms and multimedia rooms and research laboratories, areas for technology transfer and areas for business incubators.

In particular, the following are foreseen:

  • Common areas and services, including representation areas;
  • Classrooms and multimedia rooms for teaching and training activities; specifically, the creation of approximately 10 classrooms that can be divided into spaces with educational and training purposes that can be adapted to different needs over time is envisaged;
  • Research laboratories, areas for technology transfer and business incubators characterized by maximum flexibility and dynamic modulation through movable walls.

In the external area there are two parking areas, one of which belongs to the building in question (within the dedicated lot); the other outside the lot itself, according to the provisions of the Detailed Plan. Within the aforementioned parking areas, there are areas reserved for charging cars and electric vehicles and areas reserved for car-sharing.

The second batch involves the construction of a complex consisting of two new buildings for a total of approximately 5.300 mXNUMX, organized into: Common areas and services, including representation areas (approximately 30% of the total available space), Classrooms and multimedia rooms for teaching and training activities (approximately 11% of the total available space), research laboratories, areas for technology transfer and business incubators: (approximately 59% of the total space available).

All buildings will be characterized by the use of the most advanced technological solutions which will make them an example of "Zero Energy Building"and "Zero emission building“, self-sufficient from an energy point of view, strongly based on the circularity of the resources in use and capable of contributing to the path towards decarbonisation and full climate neutrality of the area. The energy will be produced entirely from renewable sources, through the combination of photovoltaics, innovative hydrogen systems for electricity and open-circuit geothermal energy.

The creation of the Technopole will contribute to the regeneration of an area that has been a highly problematic urban sector for too many decades and will make it possible to create a "large European innovation hub" with an international dimension in Pietralata and to guide Rome, and more generally the Lazio, along routes of renewed competitive capacity and towards markets of strategic interest. It will also contribute to the energy transition of the urban sector, through the development of new knowledge/procedures and their concrete validation.
